Splendor - Carnival Offering Full Refund if Desired

Do you have any additional information regarding problems with the Carnival Splendor? Just got e-mail offering full refund for 1-6-13 cruise because of damage to seal of propulsion shafts and 2 nights in Puerto Vallarta (for repairs)? but says no issue of health & safety. As some may remember the Splendor had an engine fire in the last 2 years requiring extensive dry dock with passengers stranded at sea for days (we had to reschedule because of this issue). The 900 number rep didn't have more information about how likely it would be for any possible delays in return date and time. What would you do, sail or ask for a refund?

I would go, 2 days in PV is better then 2 days in Cabo and with the history of the Splendor you know Carnival is scheduled it so it will be ready to go and should be no problems. They don't want another PR disaster like the engine room fire....err....smoke incident....of 2010.

We were on the 12/9 sailing and had problems. Our original iten was two days Cabo and one day PV. We went to PV first and stayed overnight till 3 pm. then went to Cabo the next mourning. We really enjoyed the overnight stay in PV. The ship stayed at the dock and you could come and go all night if you wanted. Plus there is alot more to do in PV then Cabo.

That is ideal in my opinion. overnight at the dock in PV, so much more to do/see in PV then cabo, but I know carnival isn't making any money on the casino or drinks if they stay in port so its rare when it does happen.

This doesn't make sense. Either they are sailing or they aren't. What would refunds to select passengers do? Are they implying there is a chance the ship may break down and giving people the option up front? What about people on the following sailing, like ME!!!!

We are going on 6 January and glad for 2 days in PV. They need to replace the seals on the shaft and it is more expeditious to do it in PV and they don't have to delay the sailing. The ship will return and be ready to go on 13 January.

Ditto, two days in PV would make it possible to enjoy the nightlife and I don't gamble so the ship's casino being closed in port overnight wouldn't bother me but that could be a deal breaker for some who've booked this cruise.

My TA says it is not usual for Carnival to offer full refunds (sometimes a credit for port changes) so still concerned that this is a routine fix with very low probability of delays or more serious. What are you basing your opinion on?

Thanks :) I mis-read the original post! We love the option of staying overnight in P.V. and would definitely not take the refund!

You would think with all the problems with the purpolision system, on 12/9 cruise, you would think they would have got it fixed on our cruise. But I guess not.

With the seal leaking is it pouring oil into the ocean or water into the ship?

For them to be offering full refunds freely, it smells like they're not disclosing something.

If your time limited take the refund. Had a friend that was at port for the unexpected 3 days instead of 2 on another line. Something about having to have a unexpected part flown in.

Especially being the Splendor.

She ended up going back into service a full month after they said she would after the fire, in Feb of 10 instead of January.

QTPieRye, I'm suddenly becoming worried for our cruise. Problems on the 12/9 sailing, now they're setting the scene for a possible cancel for the 1/6 cruise! This could be good, bad or really ugly.

I would cancel....situation at first seems great UNTIL you find out that there's more to the problem than they disclosed. I wouldn't take the chance. That's just me though. I wouldn't want to be stranded out in the middle of heck knows where for who knows how long?

January 4, 2013

Greetings folks!

We know you must be really excited about your cruise on Sunday, which is why we want to provide you some information regarding our itinerary.

During a recent cruise, the seals on the propulsion shafts were damaged by fishing nets found under water. Don't worry, this does not compromise any of the ship's safety systems and all hotel services are functioning normally.

However, in order to make the necessary repairs, we must remain docked in port for two days. Therefore, I'm sorry to say that we will have to replace Wednesday's visit to Cabo San Lucas with an overnight call in Puerto Vallarta. We know how much you were looking forward to your additional day in Cabo and regret this sudden turn of events.

We're confident you're going to enjoy your visit to Puerto Vallarta which offers a wide variety of attractions. We'll be arriving on Wednesday at 8:00 AM and are scheduled to depart on Thursday at 11:00 PM. There is plenty to see and do once we get there and the extra day will ensure you don't miss a thing! If you decide to venture into town, please be aware of your surroundings and stay with your group in the main tourist areas, as you would in any foreign country after sunset.

Shore excursions purchased for Wednesday's visit to Cabo, along with a credit for the government fees and taxes, will be automatically refunded to your Sail & Sign account. Please visit our shore excursion desk on Lobby, deck 3 forward for fun tours in Puerto Vallarta.

Despite this change, we sincerely hope you will decide to proceed with your plans to sail with us. However, guests who elect not to sail, please contact 1800 CARNIVAL to request a full refund in the amount of your cruise fare. Refunds will be processed in the original form of payment within the next two weeks.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for this change. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to welcoming you aboard the beautiful Carnival Splendor for a fun and memorable cruise vacation.

I have never heard of Carnival willfully offering full refunds. This seems fishy.

I did a double take when I read the e-mail but it has been confirmed with Carnival. Reasons cited were recent Carnival issues on other ships and cruiser complaints, last minute notice, cruiser concerns about possible hotel stays in Mexico if that was needed. Wish I was a fly on the wall to hear or see the communication by those making the decision.
