What clothes are required for South America in January?

We are sailing from Santiago in Chile leaving on the 17 January 2015.

We then sail round Cape Hope stopping at various places including the Falkland Islands until we eventually arrive in Buenos Aires on the 31 January.

Given the average weather & time of year what are the best suitable clothes & footwear to keep warm & dry whilst walking round please.

Also as we are staying on in Buenos Aires for another two days to see the City.

Any helpful tips on what to see etc would be much appreciated.

Santiago and Buenos Aires have really warm summer weather. Pile on layers as you go south.

Santiago's port is in Valparaiso, a UNESCO World Heritage city well worth a visit of one or two days.

You shojuld have clothing that can be layered. A few years ago, we got 2 inches of snow as we sailed up the Chilean coast.

Buenos Aires was about 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) when we were there this past December. Ushuaia and Falklands were around 50 F (10 C). Make sure you get to Volunteer Point in the Falklands!

Layers are the way forward.You're cruising in the summertime but the Horn will still be chilly and may be windy. Thin thermal vests,maybe even a pair of long Johns, wooly hat can be purchased on the way, fingerless gloves, so you can still use by our camera or binoculars (I like the ones which have covers over the fingertips...Primark have loads of cheap ones at the moment) perhaps a pair of thermal insoles for shoes, thin waterproof, scarf.

We've been round the Horn several times and some times the weather has been lovely (cool but dry) other times like this year we had heavy seas, rain,mist and windy and cold.

I hope you fall in love with South America like we have. BA is lovely,San Telmo, La Boca,Recoleta, the parks, the architecture, but the traffic.......

I have taken this route several times and as other said Layers are the way to go.

The warmest temperatures will be in Santiago and Buenos Aires where it will be high 80's or into low 90's with strong sun.

As you go further south it not only gets cold but what makes it seem even colder is the wind chill. Lows might be in the 40's but wind chill makes it feel cooler and highs range from day to day and I have been to places where one year the high was 60 and other times when it was snowing.

The Falkland Islands was the coldest we experienced because we were not only out in the open for a long time but also it was very windy.

We take a hat, gloves, scarf, waterproof jacket such as a NorthFace, a fleece, long john's (for some ports such as visiting the Penguins in Otway Bay and in the Falkland Islands), also wear one or two shirts depending on temps. and we take waterproof pants that we can wear over another pair. Again, you layer and you can adjust this approach based on the temperature. We use regular sports shoes but waterproof ones are good too. The jacket should have a hood.

For the Falkland Islands if we see the penguins we slip on right before we get out of the vehicle Painters Shoe Covers because it can be muddy and it makes cleanup easier for you.

Bring very warm gloves.

We love South America. It is beautiful with so much to see.
