Black Sea Ports for a Scooter User?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to decide if we can do a Black Sea cruise (Yalta, Odessa, Sevastopol in particular) and I am wondering if anyone has any advice re suitability for someone who uses a small electric mobility scooter ashore. We are fairly independent cruisers and don't often use the ship's tours, preferring to do our own thing! Obviously the famous Catacombs are not suitable or the huge flight of steps in Odessa :). Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Odessa is the only port on your list that we have been to. We found it very easy to get around mainly because we took the shuttle bus to the Opera & Ballet House and then wandered around sightseeing on the upper lever. We did pass the staircase and then came back to the staircase where we took the funicular down. I think this was the terminal where we were escorted to an elevator to get to the ship. The roadway the buses took was not scooter friendly.

Have a wonderful cruise.

We did that area in Sept. 2011 and it was the last cruise we took before buying a scooter for my husband. "The straw that broke the Camels back"

All these ports in the area are very old cities and not friendly to people who have difficulty getting around. Cobblestone walkways, no curb cutouts, etc.

Since my husband is able to walk "some" it was a no go to take the ships excursions.

I arranged most of our excursions privately so that we would not hold up any other people.

I arranged excursions in: Varma, Bulgaria, Koper Slovenia, Volos Greece, Yalta & Odessa Ukraine.

If you would like the information for these ports you can contact me at

Thank you for such a helpful reply. It really bears out what we thought! We are not really keen on what you might describe as coach tours with photo/shopping opportunities. This is what most cruise lines offer us but we prefer seeing less perhaps but at our own pace. I will check out private tours and then we will decide if the area is for us. Thanks again
