Bilbao Cruise Port - Shuttle

Does anyone know if the port offers a free shuttle bus. If so, where is the stop.

Unannounced by the cruise lines, the port provides free shuttle buses from the cruise terminal into Getxo, at approximately 20 minute intervals. The buses take a circular route, with stops at Areeta metro station (250m from the Biscay transporter bridge) and Agorta metro station, before returning to the port. Pedestrians can take a ride on the transporter bridge for 0.35 Euros each way. Buy tickets from the pay machines.

Will they take mobility scooters/ or the taxis or can we walk please

Ship docked in Getxo. Ride is 15-20 min. We were left off close to the Guggenheim and the fine arts muse. Walked to both museums. Loved them. Had lunch at the bar in the Guggenheim...3 tapas and drink for 9 euros. Guggenheim gave us discount for disabled and senior. We paid 15 euros for the both of us. The fine arts let us in free.

We have been to Gexto twice in the past 4 years (with HAL) and both times the Port (in conjunction with the city of Bilbao) provided free shuttle bus transportation into downtown Bilbao. The first time we were dropped off in the main shopping area and last year they moved the drop point to a street only a few blocks from the Guggenheim. These were nice Coach-type buses so we assume they would store scooters underneath (but the passenger would have to be capable of getting on and off the bus.

One note is that HAL did not go out of their way to tell folks about a "free shuttle" until the night before we got to Gexto. This meant that they could sell more tours...and some of the folks were not happy that they shelled out the big bucks for tours when there was that free shuttle bus. This seems to be a growing problem on HAL (and some other cruise lines) where they do not inform passengers of free or low cost options at many ports. The cruise lines are all about selling excursions and not necessarily about keeping passengers well informed. The days when HAL had real Port Experts (like Frank Buckingham) who would explain all options seems to have become a relic of the past on most cruises.

Hank same thing on X they had a bus for 10 dollars unlimited back and forth (it was an overnight stop) went all day came back to Gexto (ship) for dinner and back to Bilbao till 1:am (last bus) .While they did charge it was a great value and better than most excursions ,it is a great walking town ,also we found Gexto worth a few hours before we departed. The local port authority even gave out very nice posters of the local area (nice touch).

Even at $10 round trip that shuttle is a great way to get into town. My understanding is that the shuttles are not actually run by the cruise line...which is why they are free or inexpensive. There is also public transit, but that means hiking out of the port to get to the nearest tram/train station. But with the shuttle buses I don't think anyone hikes over to the local train.

For those who have not been to Bilbao, it has become somewhat of a cosmopolitan city (much improved from our first visit back in 1998. The old town area is a nice area to stroll and there is a very active market along the river. You can also walk into the heart of downtown where there are some major department stores and many smaller shops. As to the Guggenheim, we think its a great place to admire from the outside (there are walkways all the way around) and you can even walk in the main door for a peak..before you get to where you need an entrance ticket. Our problem with the museum is we are not very impressed with their collection which is very contemporary. One of our "favorite" works of art is a pile of dirt and dust with a broom and dustpan (this is true). We have visited the museum on 3 trips, but only bothered to pay the entrance fee twice hoping that they had improved the collection. It actually seemed worse then our first visit when at least they had a special Armani Exhibition.

Thank you people are so kind on here I can get off an on a bus I can walk limited distance so that would be great sometimes we cant get off an that's fine [i don't want to be on a coach to long so organised tours arnt for me]

but if we can get off and Tony can get a walk round that's better still

So thank you for any info at all we don't mind getting a taxi if they take the scooter .... We got a taxi last year in Valencia and he was absolutely brilliant
