What is cheapest way to stay connected while away. Calling and Internet options
The cheapest way is to take your laptop ashore and find a place with free wi-fi. Second cheapest is have international calling added to your cellphone for the time that you are gone (you might need to pay for one month) and call when you are ashore. Buying the onboard internet package would probably be less expensive than paying for cellphone calls (but many ships have ship to shore from your cabin phone which would be less expensive then a cellphone call). (If you use the onboard internet compose your email's offline in order to save minutes.)
(I noticed the double post, you can open the other post and click on the red triangle and ask the moderators to delete it.)
Take a laptop and type your message while not logged in to the ship's system. Then log in, copy and paste your message into your email server, copy and paste any incoming messages from your email server to your laptop, and log out of the ship's system. You can usually do all that in a minute. Then read the emails at leisure.
We usually post on Facebook--or emails. On Princess we each get a lot of free minutes, so that helps.
Also, there are usually really cheap internet cafes in ports, often right at the port. That works well too. Phoning seems to be more of a hassle, especially when there are big time zone differences, and other problems.
