Accessible Tours in Halifax and St. John

My wife who uses a wheelchair or scooter due to limited mobility and I are going on a Carnival Canada Cruise next June. Can anyone recommend any tour providers with a lift van in both Halifax and St. John?

I used a scooter in Halifax in June. I rode along the boardwalk, taking in the sights and stopped at the water's edge for a lobster meal. It was a very pleasant day.

Thanks for the info, I kind of figured that Canada would be a lot better then the Caribbean when it came to being accessible.

The cruise line generally has a w/c accessible tour in both ports -- Saint John of just the town, the water tide, and ends at the market. And in Halifax something very general as well. Not overly interesting.

In Saint John you can get to the Market via the pedway -- indoor system of skywalks, etc., made for inclement weather -- the w/c accessible elevators are all there -- all the way to the market -- kind of fun to find them and navigate this -- sort of an adventure. In Saint John, the entrance is right at the square -- on the side street - clearly marked and there are elevators at every level -- ask -- it's a friendly town. Lots of small stores, eateries inside -- final destination is the famous Market -- going back is all down hill so you can take the sidewalks back to the ship -- a right after the Market. There is also a nice museum here -- entrance is inside mall area.

In Halifax what the previous writer was referring to was The Harbor Walk -- to the right of the ship. It is flat, some boardwalk, some flat earth -- lots of sights and some small shops -- will lead you to the Maritime Museum (Titanic Exhibit) (approx. 3/4 mile) and a little further, Murphy's Restaurant -- good eatery $$$ inside and out.

Upon speaking to the taxi coordinator outside in Halifax, she informed me that if I asked for a w/c lift taxi, one could be supplied. Taxis are regulated in price -- approx. $45/hr. -- Peggy's Cove/city tour being 3 hours. Downtown is $10 (to museum, casino, shopping). The pink buses are not accessible.

In both ports there are lovely vendors right at the port. In addition, the Immigration Museum -- called Pier 21 (Halifax) is accessible and right where the ship docks at Pier 21 -- not a true museum in my book, but wonderful and interesting to all.

As a scooter user, I love these ports -- getting a cab or person to drive you outside of area to Valley (wineries) or to Lunenburg is wonderful -- but if not there is enough to suffice on one's own. Citadel is another interesting idea -- but hill is not great with the scooter -- taxi ride would be $10. Do some research and you'll be all set. Vicki

Thanks for your help. It seems like this will be much easier then in the Caribbean where Laurie has to use her wheelchair instead of her scooter when we go on a tour. So many times the cruise line says a tour is accessible and she ends up staying in the van every stop cause it's to hard for her to get in and out several times or the stop isn't accessible.

Forgot to mention there is an accessible casino in Halifax -- 1.3 miles from ship. Follow the Harbor Walk to the end (ferry terminal) or any time before -- cut over to the main street -- 1 block and continue going straight -- past tall city buildings and parking garage. The casino (approx. 600 slots) is a building behind the Marriot Hotel -- about 2 blocks further. It's clean, nice and you must play in Canadian money -- whatever you exchange (i.e. $100) will be given to you in Canadian money -- upon leaving -- only that money exchanged will be converted back. In other words give $100 -- get $100 --- YOUR SUPPOSED WINNINGS WILL BE CANADIAN MONEY!!!! LOL Vicki:)
