Private tours in Auckland, New Zealand - pre cruise

We arrive the day before our cruise, and I am also interested in suggestions for that afternoon, and the next day before boarding the ship. I think we will be spending our one night at the Hilton. I am thinking of dining at the Orbit restaurant in the Sky Tower. Is that a good choice?

The pier is close to the downtown. There is a HOHO bus stop at the Ferry Terminal building. Will get you a quick look around. There is a stop at Kelly Tarltons Antarctic experience. We booked HOHO with Viator www.viator.com The Skytower is in walking distance of the pier. www.skycity.co.nz The Hilton is on the pier. The Orbit restaurant is quite good. Make reservations online.

There are good city sight tours with Grayline and Great Sights in Auckland. They both run morning and afternoon tours.

www.grayline.co.nz

www.greatsights.com.nz

or private escorted tours www.exclusivetours.co.nz or www.exclusivelyauckland.co.nz

The Explorer Bus is the HOHO bus www.explorerbus.co.nz

And Orbit is good. Try and get there at twilight so you can see the sun set over the city and then watch the street lights come on.

We have same schedule, keep in mind you'll have been traveling in most cases for 20++ hrs, and feeling a lot of jet lag or just plain exhaustion (especially if you're fogeys like Dh & I). I'm trying to plan something...but with not being allowed to check into OUR hotel (The Langham) till 3pm, we might run into problems there also, and next day we need check out by 11am. We have transfers provided but this really screws up trying to do any tours!

Thanks for everyone's help. I totally understand about the "being tired", however, no matter how we look at it we arrive around 6 am and need to fill in the space. We are not going a day early, so we arrive the morning our ship leaves. As usual we probably can't even think about arriving at the port before noon and since we're not spending any extra time in Auckland we figured we might as well see what we can.

I would suggest finding a car service that can pick you up at the airport and provide a guide to give you a half day tour of the city before dropping you off at the pier. That way you can store your luggage in the trunk and see as much as possible without tiring yourselves.

That could be a very expensive exercise. I think the HOHO is probably the easiest option BUT you will need to store your luggage somewhere
