Default Ernesto damage

Ernesto made landfall 55miles north of Chetumal. Thankfully for those that live there, it was a minor storm. I know it's early, but has anyone heard any damage reports for the Costa Maya port area?

Default Mahahual

This link was posted in my Roll Call. Seems Mahahual (near Costa Maya) made it through without any real damage. Glad to hear that.

Looks like some palms down and a couple of buffers from the fishing pier broke off based on a news report I saw earlier today. Maya Chan's web cam was down all day.

Default Report

Hurricane Ernesto - Here are the actual measurements from Margarita del Sol Weather station for 8 Aug 12 - Landfall - Mahahual Mexico:
Wind gust 100 mph at 2:46 am
Average Wind Speed 66 mph at 2:53am
Barometer 28.47 inHg at 2:13 am
RainFall rate 1.37 inches per hour at 2:42am

Landfall was actually across the town of Mahahual.

The town is without power or cell phone service. Services are expected to be restored in serval days. The only cell tower was knocked over and a portable tower is enroute.

Minor to moderate damages reported. Most businesses will reopen in the next few days. Lots of clean-up to be done.

I heard that Mahahual took a direct hit. Glad to hear it was relatively minor. If the people and business's made it through ok, the rest of it can be fixed.

Nohoch Kay posted on FB today. Lots of clean up but no structural damage all along the malecon, I gather. Fishing pier is wrecked though. Not sure about cruise port but the way it's constructed should be okay, maybe minor damges to open shops. I'd be interested to see what happened to the remaining structures at Cha-Chi. I'd be willing to be they're mostly down now. Web cam at Maya Chan is still down..probably due to the cell tower. Thankfully not a Denis intense storm. But 92L way out in the Atlantic could follow Ernesto's path if it picks up speed and current upper air patterns hold.

I do not want to see any area hit by a storm, but after Dean this area deserves a break for many years to come. We were there many times before Hurricane Dean, and although many areas have come back, it is so different. We loved the laid back areas of restaurants under trees right at the edge of the water; now the Malecon.
Cat's Meow was a favority place and I still wear their t shirt.
It is a concern that the prediction for storms was just increased today, so all storm prone areas need to stay on alert.

From Maya Chan:

"There's got to be a morning after...but sometimes the morning is scarier than the night before....We were hit head on with 104 mph winds, rain, and huge storm surge."

Yep-just saw the pics Maya Chan posted on FB. Downed trees and beach chairs.

Default Update

Progress continues on a quick recovery form Ernesto. Power has been restored to most of the area. Internet service was resotre just hours after the pasaage of the hurricane. However, cell phone service is still down. Most of the businesses have reopened.

Clean-up of sand and storm debris will take a bit longer. Overall, the town will be open for business and tourist.

The hardest hit were the locals, many that live in small wooden sturctures with tin roof.

Many of the folks who weathered hurricane Dean learned valuable lessons which helped them with Ernesto.

I am sure the local businesses would appreciate you extra business and support while visiting.

I am not on Facebook, but if anyone knows what happened at Maya Chan, please share. In the picture above, is that a palapa or the main area where the bar and eating area is located? I love that place! There was so little reporting on actual landfall; most said "south of Belize".

I know Maya Chan posted that picture above, but didn't state where it actually was.

They also posted: "Ouch"

I just emailed Mark from Maya Chan to make our down payment. He said they were doing fine and the staff were well prepared and hard working.

Thanks for the response. Cannot tell if that was their main eating area. I am sure they lost beach through erosion.
Glad Mark responded they are working on repairs and hope they do not get hit again this season.

Maya Chan Beach is alive and well. Massive Cleanup. Daugher Chelsie flew in to help out. Full staff has been fantastic. We will be 100% in a few days. As in Monty Python's "The Holy Grail". " Just a flesh wound" Thank everyone for all of the support. MCB lives on better than ever.
