What to wear on an excursion

We are going on an excursion to the canals and jungle in Costa Rica in March. Anyone who has done this, what is your advise as far as long pants? Are the bugs really bad that it's necessary to wear long pants? I planning on taking bug spray, I just wondered about the long pants in the heat. Thanks

We just returned yesterday. Assuming your talking about the Puerto Limon area, we went to the Jaguar Animal Rescue Center, Del Monte Banana Plantation, and the Tortuguero Canals (all in the rain forests) and we all wore shorts and short sleeved t-shirts. I'm usually the bug magnet and bugs were a non-issue. It's dry season down there now so unless it gets unusually rainy between now and when you go, I'd say you'll be fine. Take some good bug spray just in case. Have fun! It's awesome!!

we did the same tour as zelker (wasn't the rescue center amazing, zelker?) plus a couple of hours at playa bonita. I wore my swimsuit with shorts and a tank top. we went in the month of December and didn't have any bug issues, although we carried a small can of bug spray in our backpack.
