My wife and mother-in-law are actually on the cruise! Carnival has said the following:

- Engine room fire
- No injuries
- No propulsion
- Only emergency power
- Do not know when they will return to port!

Yes it's true, i received an automated call from Carnival that the Engine room caught on fire and they will be late. Then they spit out a number too fast for me to write down. It's okay, a little google showed it's happened more than once. It might be time to retire this ship lol

We got the email notification on the way to Galveston, 2 hours out. I'm driving in a 15 passenger van that we paid $330 to rent to get the 8 of us down here. We have 3 hotel rooms booked for tonight in Galveston, kind of annoying that they do not have any more definitive information as to what the game plan is. I hope they plan on reimbursing travel costs.

What is going on with Triumph??? This makes me sad....hope it's not too major...hope everyone onboard is safe and can enjoy the extra sea time despite this terrible news...cruising on her in May!

I contacted the Galveston Daily News to see if they had any more information than I knew, but I actually think I knew more! They said they had a reporter working on and to give her the information I had so far!

Well, it's officially in the news cycle. Channel 15 out of Alabama has picked up the story.

Gulf of Mexico (WPMI) New Orleans Coast Guard officials confirm a Carnival cruise ship is currently stalled in the Gulf of Mexico.

Carnival Cruise officials said The Carnival Triumph had a minor electrical fire, that is now extinguished.

3,100 passengers are on board.

Coast Guard authorities say they are "monitoring the situation" and that there has been no request for assistance as of yet.

It happened around 10:30 Sunday morning.

Carnival Cruise officials released a statement.

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH STATEMENT

February 10, 2013 - 11.30am EST

This morning the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced an engine room fire while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room. The shipboard firefighting squads continue to monitor the situation. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

The vessel is currently without propulsion and the ship is operating on emergency generator power.

There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew on board and all guests have been asked to remain in the ship’s public areas and open decks. Guests are being provided with food and refreshments.

All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified.

Carnival Triumph is currently on a four-day cruise that departed Galveston, Texas on Thursday.
