When we had a land based vacation around Australia I purchased a mobile device in Sydney to use on my notebook for internet connection. This was very successful and much less expensive than using hotel internets.
I now have an ipad and are going to be cruising around NZ. I am wondering if it is possible to purchase a mini sim card in NZ that I could use for internet access when in port. I think this would be very inexpensive compared to ship charges. Has anybody done this? At the moment I have a UK mini sim card that connects me via the phone service if I am out and about but it would be too expensive to use abroad. If a ship if cruising mainly around one country maybe it's a good option for many people It would work for cruises around the UK. I can only go away so much if I do some work on board! I have posted this message on the Austria/NZ board too. |

Technically it should work if your iPad is "unlocked".
Here in the US if you purchase a device from the phone carrier at a "discounted/subsidized" price your device is electronically locked into the carriers network. Only after a certain period or when your contract is done may you request the device to be unlocked. Check with your UK phone carrier to see if the device is locked. To check if your device is unlocked, borrow a SIM from a different carrier and try it. If it works your device is unlocked. |
