Evenings on Star Clipper

After 22 cruises on the "big ships", I'd like to try the Star Clipper to the BVI next Spring. I'm very excited reading all the posts and studying the SC web-site. My only concern is "nightlife". What time do the piano bar and Tropical bar usually close down at night? I'm one on a cruise to stay up very late (after midnight). Would I be sitting in the bars by myself? My wife assures me I'll be bored....certainly not during the days, only at night. Please set my mind at ease!!! Thanks!

We were on Star Clipper in April. I wasn't bored at night, made friends with some folk and we could sit outside at the bar, have a drink (or two) and talk. There was life up to at least midnight! SC is quieter and more laid back, which was perfect for us!

Then there were various activities in the evening, including talent contests with guest and crew members. You won't find casinos, discos, and stage shows. But we met great people from around the World and enjoyed their company.

This pretty will sums it. We enjoyed it, but we don't rely on the usual big ship entertainment.

We love the Star Clipper Ships because of their cosiness and because everything is so relaxed. Of course, you don't go to dinner in bathing sandals and tank tops, but you don't need a jacket and tie. Casual eleganz, as my hubby says. If you want a jacket and tie, okay! Some women wear high heels because they're in, but on a rocking ship - that would be too dangerous for me.....Flat shoes, neat clothes and good people. On the Star Clipper ships, as you have read, there is a midnight snack from 11:30 pm til 12:30 am. So the bar is open.

Luvbigdogs - We have been on the Clippers several times (next one coming up shortly - coincidentally with muskatnuss we have found out on Cruise Critic) - mostly in the Caribbean including the BVIs, and have seen convivial late night gatherings and quiet times - depends to some extent on your luck with your fellow passengers. How about the morning? With camera at the ready the probable best chance to see dolphins swimming under the bow is early morning. I see that Virgin Gorda is on the Star Clipper itinerary that you are considering. If that includes going in to North Sound (it did for us on the Royal Clipper) then getting in there is a masterclass of navigation and seamanship - ask the Captain/an Officer (in a quiet moment) to show you the Sea Chart for that and you will see why. Suggest you be in the vicinity of the open part of the bridge for the entry in to (and departure from) North Sound. Our Captain on the Royal Clipper, when we went in there, received a huge round of applause from the passengers when we went in there - and when we came out!! I thoroughly recommend your proposed holiday on the Star Clipper - it would be quite extraordinary if it is anything other than "excellent".

  • 2 months later...

We sailed the Treasure Islands on the Star Clipper last December. We met so many wonderful people on board and would some times sit in the dining area laughing and sharing until long after the meal was finished. The bar area is lively until after the midnight snack...well, lively is relative, there are people enjoying themselves as the wind whips their hair and the sounds of the sails and the water plays a beautiful background melody. Sometimes it is nice to find a secluded spot to slip in to and sit quietly and just listen, feel the motion of the ship. There is usually a dedicated morning coffee group who gather to watch sunrise. Finding people to talk with was never a problem, in fact the bartenders are quite fun. We are still in touch with several people we met on the ship. However, it is also nice to crawl in to bed early and be lulled to sleep by the movement so that you are bright and fresh for a new day of adventure! Have Fun!!
