There's plenty to see and do in Homer without booking an excursion through the ship. Depends on your interests and activity level.

(send for Homer's free visitor guide)

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies and the Islands & Oceans Visitor Center have some interesting activities and hikes. Some for $5. And if you have kids there's a Jr Biologist Program.

The Pratt Museum in Homer is rather nice. Homer is an "arty" community with nice shops and several galleries. I particularly like some of the quirky shops on the spit. There are also a couple of nice restaurants on the spit. And, on a nice day, taking the ferry (the Kachemak Voyager) over and back to Seldovia is a great way to spend a day. A nice day, or several days, can be spent in Homer without taking any type of formal "excursion."

Homer does put together an informative visitor guide. Request a copy.

All is well and good, for touring on your own, very simple, BUT the big problem is no car, with the OP, which just about shuts out plenty and gives far less options. The sea, is certainly a highlight, so it needs to be decided what is of the most priority in their "too" short time.
