Best cruise for Norwegian Fjords

We are planning to take a cruise to Norway with my 85 year old father in 2014. The thing he wants most is to see the fjords. Are there any cruise ships that travel through the fjords so that he wouldn't necessarily have to get off the ship or do an excursion in order to see them? We're trying to make this as easy as possible.

Welcome to Cruise Critic Hailey22. I would suggest either Holland America Line or Cunard for your father and you.

Both lines are classic and historic with top-notch service, delicious food and excellent service.

The Cunard Queen Victoria does a nice 7-day Fjords cruise round trip Southampton on July 20, 2014 with stops in | Bergen, Norway | Andalsnes, Norway | Olden, Norway | Stavanger, Norway.

Holland America Lines Rotterdam has a 14-day cruise through the fjords on August 30 rt Rotterdam, Holland with stops | Oslo, Norway | Kristiansund, Norway | Stavanger, Norway | Flaam, Norway | Bergen, Norway | Geiranger, Norway | Alesund, Norway | Eidfjord, Norway.

Queen Victoria will be the larger of the two ships with a 1,791 passengers while Rotterdam has a slightly smaller amount at 1,318. These numbers reflect the a normal capacity where each cabin bed is not occupied.

Another nice line Celebrity Cruises features a 10-day cruise round trip Harwich, England on July 4, 2014 with stops in Oslo, Norway | Stavanger, Norway | Olden, Norway | Alesund, Norway | Geiranger, Norway | Flaam, Norway | Bergen, Norway

This is a great itinerary on a nice older ship.

However, I think you're dad would really love Cunard for it's traditional feeling, white-gloved afternoon tea service in the Queens Ballroom, elegant public space and service.

You do not have to debark the ship to see the fjords you will sail right passed them, some sea days are designated as scenic cruising to specifically enjoy the beautiful gorges and mountains towering above you.

It would be a shame though to miss some of the ports as they offer such interesting places to visit and sights to see.

Good Luck, happy planning and let us know which cruise you decide on. ;)

Most of the destinations are at the end of a fjord, with a sail-in and sail-out of up to 4 hours each way. As a rule of thumb, if the cruise title includes the word "fjord" and the destinations include both Geiranger and Flam, then you'll have an itinerary that will certainly suit.

For more detail, get a map of Norway and find the ports. You'll see how far inland you can get.

We took a QM2 grand Fjord cruise a couple of summers ago. It was a great cruise. Lots to do on the ship. Many people stayed on the ship. You still had great views from the ship with waterfalls & fjords. Highly recommend :)

There is a 11 nights Royal Caribbean cruise with the Legend of the Seas (one of their smaller ships) from Kopenhagen/Denkmark in June going to the fjords with a really nice itinerary.

You should also check out the cruise with the "Queen Mary 2" from Hamburg/Germany on May 26 going on a 8 nights cruise to the Norwegian Fjords. This ship really is worth seeing. From the ports Kopenhagen and Hamburg are some interesting Norwegian Fjord cruises in 2014.

If you want somethins special (and of course expensive) check on the Ship "Silver Visper" (Silversea cruise line), only 382 passengers, board language is mainly English, very elegant and sailing for example on June 2nd from Kopenhagen to the Fjords.
