Happy cruising! You may be lucky! A friend's husband reported today that he saw whales on the ocean side of Fraser Island.

We saw whales on the way to Brisbane from Sydney in May. There have been many seen off Sydney recently making their way up to the breeding grounds in Queensland so you may be lucky.

We have seen whales from cruise ships, but they haven't been close. All we have seen is a spout of water in the distance - nothing like what you can see on a whale watching cruise on a small boat.

Gotta be lucky as well. I've been on cruises where others have seen them, yet we haven't. Right place, right time and all that.

We had one surface close to the ship when we were off Iwo Jima...its a sad dark place and the ship was almost stationary...it was eyrie to see the whale while thinking about the loss of life in that sad place in the middle of nowhere.

Watch for them closer to land than you think. They tend to hug the coast as they head north & south. Saw 5 -6 two weeks ago.

A few years ago I was on a cruise to New Guinea, during migration period. Saw a whole pod of around 10 - they were travelling slower than us naturally and we were able to see them for quite a long time as the ship passed them. We were all a bunch of fools - the whales were slapping the water (looked every bit like they were waving), so of course the entire ship stood on deck and waved back, yelling "hello". Myself included.

On the Pacific Sun to Nth Queensland last week and saw whales, a little way off the ship but saw the water spouts and tails flipping out of the water a few times. Announcements from the bridge whenever they were sighted.

Heard something on the news today , that a pod of whales has been spotted off the Gold Coast and all the whale watching boats have been beseiged with sightsee'rs wanting to go out and see them.
