Rough Seas Costa Rica itinerary?

 Share

Recommended Posts

We cruised at the end of December 2014, first of January 2015. We had perfect weather for sailing. No issues at all with the seas. Our itinerary "hugged" the coast which I think helps out too. It was a great cruise!

The ocean is the ocean but we did the Panama Canal to Costa Rica calm seas. The canal obviously no problem, you do hug the coast should not be a problem. Again ocean, waves, weather... Who is to know but calm seas are in your favor. Remember center of the ship the further down you are the less rocking. It is a spectacular trip. Happy Sailing.

We did the Costa Rica cruise this January and seas were an issue at times. Nicaragua stop was cancelled because of rough weather and some of the loadings of the zodiacs were a problem because of the ships roll

Weve done it twice in January, on the Wind Star. No probs off west coast of Costa Rica. For one trip, we couldn't go to Nicaragua due to very high winds that were part of a very unusual arctic blast that came down thru the states from Canada. Capt tried to sail into Nicaragua port, but 90mph winds, so he reveresed course and we returned to CR waters, which were smoother. She IS a sailing ship so of course, she rocks, but nothing that was bothersome to us. (Never did get to Nicaragua: it was abandoned on the earlier trip due to Dengue Fever outbreak at that time)

Done this trip a few times and have spent many days at sea all over the Pacific. The biggest issue for most cruise passengers that worry about the weather on a trip from the Cannal to Costa Rica really isn't storms. They can happen but not as often as some think. You might experience sea swells that are the aftermath of storms that happened thousands of miles north of Costa Rica but those swells shouldn't be anything for you to worry about. The fly in the ointment for your trip can be considerable westerly winds that move from the Pacific over Cost Rica and into the Caribbean sea. Heavy westerly's can affect the sea state (no storms needed) and every once in awhile make the sea get a little naughty but usually not naughty enough to become 'rail worthy'. You've booked a great cruise. Don't hang up on the weather and have a great trip!
