Walking Vancouver

We plan to walk or bike around Stanley Park in the AM. What are some other must see things to do? Can you walk to downtown from the Park or do we need to take a bus? We are avid walkers and 3-5 miles isn't a problem for us.We were thinking of going to Capilano Suspension Bridge also. Can you walk there from Stanley Park? I saw there was a free shuttle bus from downtown. Does it go though Stanley Park so you could pick it up along the way? What is the best order do to things if you want to do Stanley Park, Suspension Bridge and downtown? We have about 8 hrs.

Yes you can walk from downtown to Stanley Park - it is about a mile - the Park itself is large - over a 1000 acres - larger than Central Park in NYC - biking is a great option as the seawall goes right around the Park and is flat - the east side of the Park - closest to downtown is the most developed and where you could spend many hours.

While you could walk to the Cap bridge it would take several hours to get there and it is a good uphill climb - the free shuttle to the bridge is the way to go.

Looking at the Cap Bridge shuttle pick up points it doesn't look like it will stop near the Park even though it will go through the Park:

One thing they might do is drop you off on the way back at say the Westin Bayshore which is near the entrance to the Park and also where there are 3 or 4 bike rentals places.

I would suggest doing the Cap bridge first, Stanley Park on your return and then whatever time you have left spend it downtown in Gastown/Chinatown or walking our vibrant Robson/Denman/Davie shopping areas.

Downtown to Stanley Park is easy if you're a walker, it's about a mile.

To get to the Capilano suspension bridge, I would recommend the local bus system. From downtown (next to Canada Place cruise terminal), you take 'seabus' across the inlet, and then there's a bus that goes right up Capilano Road. http://translink.bc.ca/ has all the info you'll need.

Gastown is the birthplace of the City of Vancouver - it has shopping, eating and lots of old historic buildings and don't miss the Gastown Steam Clock. Here's a link to a website on Gastown:

From our only experience there and only having a day to see as much as we could see, the HOHO Trolley system works great. Being able to Hop On and Hop Off the various stops, walk around as much as you want or even to the next stop and get a very informative guide/driver along the way is just the thing.

Mercury docks at 7:00am at Canada Place...our flight to Calgary, AB is at 3:00pm...do we have time to walk around the downtown area a bit or should we just go to the airport?

I've read on the CC boards that a baggage storage area is available right at the terminal so thought we might be able to wander some but we don't have any Vancouver City knowledge! :eek:

We'd love to do Granville Island...how far...taxi cost...do we have enough time to try this?... OR... is there a Mall or something neat to do... close to Canada Place?

Hope some homegrown Vancouverites or well informed cruisers can share some downtown Vancouver City info with us.:D

Are you sure Mercury is docking at Canada Place? Most of Celebrity's ships dock at Ballantyne pier (about 1.5 miles east of Canada Place in the industrial docks). You can verify it at http://www.portmetrovancouver.com but their website isn't responding right now

Last Sept/08 we were on the Millennium and docked at Ballantyne and when we sailed out of port the Mercury was at Canada Place so I'm assuming our Sept 6/09 Alaska Cruise on the Mercury will be docked at Canada Place. I'll have to double check! Thanks for the link!! :D
