Getting off early

Doing a transatlantic next spring. Last port is Normandy before disembarking in Southampton the next morning. Has anyone had any luck getting Princess to let you arrange in advance to disembark early. We have a few extra days after the cruise and wanted to do a couple nights in Paris. Would make sense to do it first before seeing London where our flight back to Canada departs from.

Can be done. You need to arrange with princess and let them know your plans in advance. This in particular is one that has been done before. One thing, you will still pay fully for the cruise in spite of leaving a day early

They are under zero obligation to allow this. The Cruiseline will have to arrange immigration formalities just for you and it's not always possible. So just because it's been done before don't be surprised if they say no.

We did this 2 years ago , transatlantic and we left the ship early in Dublin, you need to contact Pricess and get a Route Deviation Request, takes a few week but you'll get one no problem. Are you on the Crown by any chance

Very negative response to an honest question . In fact I have been on three recent European cruises with Princess where at least 1 couple or more has arranged to leave early without difficulty. On the Baltics in Norway, as above in La Havre and last month on the med where people left early in Livorno with the intent to continue on in Florence .

In the US passengers are refused early departure if that action would violate the PVSA but that is a non issue in the rest of the world.

To the OP, do arrange things well in advance as there is paperwork so it is not something you can do as a spur of the moment adventure.

Interesting thing was when we did we only got credit for days we where on board, even though we paid for all, not a complaint as it was 100% our decision. We left the ship 4 days early, ring princess they will sort it no problem, especially easy if you have already landed in Europe prior to your disembarkation port

This is quite common on this cruise especially if large groups from Europe have booked cruise, we did this cruise once and around a third of the ship got off.

Saves on flights etc, if they can just hop on to a local bus ,train or get friends to pick them up, why not.

Expect Princess is quite happy in that they get full fare, but turned around in Southampton a little less stress full for room stewards baggage guys etc.

Princess is offering us in Scotland the chance to do a mini cruise first few days of a transatlantic and get off in Scotland.

As above, this takes a little time to arrange, so don't leave it till the last minute. Also, once arranged, it cannot be undone. Again, be sure of your desire and your dates before you place the request.

Interesting that you didn't get credit for days paid but not cruised. When we had a 24 hour delay in embarkation due to weather, we DID get credit for the "cruised" day even though we spent it sitting in a terminal waiting for fog to clear. Probably the issue that in one situation it was the passenger's choice, in the other it was no one's choice.

I have been following threads relating to disembarking early as we are considering doing this next year on a British Isles cruise.

But just to make you aware, no port is guaranteed and on at least one sailing this season they were unable to make the La Havre port stop. So although the odds are low, you need to have a Plan B.

Exactly how was that negative?? The OP needed to be prepared for the cruise line to say no. Yes it can be arranged but not always and it DOES involve the Cruiseline making arrangements for Immigration to process this early departure and that is where the issue can arise. Not to mention if there is an extra cost the departing cruise may be paying that too.

Yes call the cruise line and see if it's possible and be prepared if it's not!

We are planning exactly that route deviation on our May 2017 BI cruise Our TA said we can't get the letter before full payment but said its done all the time. It's a good plan because it's only 90 minutes to Paris on the train Fingers are crossed that all goes well as I've already booked our apartment beginning the evening of our early departure date. [emoji3]

They can't very well hold you prisoner on the ship against your will.

I'm sure if everyone is polite it can be often worked out.

We have done this previously, for a different port. As others have stated, just be sure to inform Princess in advance.

Despite JVilleGal's comments, this has been discussed many times on many CC forums. I don't recall ever reading where someone was denied early disembarkation.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice. We will call Princss once we make final payment and try to arrange this. I'm sure it won be a problem but if it is that's ok, we'll continue to Southampton and get back to France. Such tough first world problems ;)

And on that cruise there were (I think) about a dozen passengers who had planned to get off at Le Havre. They ended up with a choice of getting off in the alternate port that day (Zeebruge) or staying on to Southampton.

Of course we had that alternate port because there was a week's notice that Le Havre would not be possible due to a planned strike by port workers. If Le Havre is missed on other cruises, it could end up being just another sea day.

We did this same route deviation in May of this year, and no problem getting the authorization. HOWEVER, on the next voyage scheduled to stop in Le Havre the French dockworkers were venting their displeasure at something through a job action and the ship skipped the port :eek:. Better have a back-up plan to get to Le Havre or wherever just in case. We would have lost a hotel night and car rental fee, as well as incurring the expense and lost time, one day of going back across the Channel.

Got off in Lahavre France many years ago, requested to leave early well in advance so we could make our air arrangements etc. Was not problem. At that time we worked with a TA, who made the request for us.

If I was doing to day would simply call Princess and inquire on how best to make that request in writing, over email or fax? They responded to us in writing in the past, so we could advise The Customer Service desk on board.

There should be no customs or immigration issues at La Havre until the UK officially leaves the European Union.
