I have heard the expression "Thanks for sailing with us" used after the completion of cruises.
Given that most cruise ships are now powered by diesel motors, I am wondering where this term originated from. If any one out there knows let me know |

For thousands of years the term "sailing" (or its equivalent in whatever language) meaning: using sails to move a vessel, came to include meaning "going to sea" - since sailing was the only way of going to sea.
That "going to sea" meaning or "sailing" has survived, while the literal use of sails, except for pleasure, has largely disappeared.

In the days of Sitmar Cruises, a line with prefominantly Italian crew, they had what is still my favorite send off after the cruise. "Ciao for now".
