JUst back from out trip.... I slipped our steward $20 on the first night.. may as well have flushed that one.... room was dirty... husband had a nosebleed one night... sheets were NEVER changed until 3 days later after numerous notes to him to please change the bed... they finally were changed and not by our steward...(it was his helper) I had 2 rooms DD and grandson on 1 room,(her room was not cleaned until late Sunday night (after she was given the room at noon on Sunday) DS, DH and I in the other and again the room was not clean when we walked in... (let's start a trip out right eh?) I honestly thought that would be the worst of it but the fact that the linen was not changed all week? gee I change mine at home at least twice a week!! needless to say there was no extra passed today when we left.....

Did you go to the front desk to let them know the cabin wasn't being cleaned / bed wasn't changed? Supervisors can't fix what they don't know about.

I remember seeing a note that they only change the sheets one during the cruise. Its usually in the bathroom with the "hang your towels to reuse" sign.

I wonder if it was a case of the steward not having sheets to change the bed with?

I would not have let it go, I woul have gone to the front desk or the hotel manager after then sheets were not changed the day the note was left.

Not being a good confrontational person I tend to let things go...I certainly did not want to cost this guy his job...so no I did not go to the desk to complain... my DD did although and she was rewarded with a bottle of wine and chocolate covered strawberries.,... Our Steward did say he was at the end of his contract and had just 2 more weeks... then he did not know what ship he would be on.. so I kept thinking he was just burned out...It was just little things that I felt could have been better...finger prints left on mirrors all week... dust... a spill not wiped up... the pull out bed not put up daily...the state room was tight to begin with with 3 adults but to add that bed out all the time made it tighter...

I can understand not changing the sheets daily, but if you see that there is blood all over the pillow case and the sheet one would assume that the bed would be changed....

I mostly go on cruises 35+ I always leave the hotel service charge in place but do not give anything extra to ether the cabin or dining room steward. They both get around $3.50 of the $11.50 per day added to my ship board account. Cabin steward might have 30 cabins to deal with and dinning room steward might have say 20 people. So, they end up with good money for a 35 cruise. Some would say we're paying their salary.

I do give maybe $20 to people who work in the lido or other areas of a ship if they do good service.

I would never give a cabin steward any money when I first meet him or her. When I got on board. To some it would be insulting to get the money up front. Plus they might have to turn the money given in.

On my most recent cruise the cabin steward had 10, not 30 cabins. I don't know where you get your facts, but you're "guessing" wrong.

Any cabin steward with 30 cabins will also have an assistant that they need to pool tips with.

Duck, Interesting how you know that I'm "GUESSING WRONG". LOL Did I mention which cruise line I've traveled on? This is a New User Forum, not a cruise line specific forum. I didn't notice anyone else mention any cruise line so I didn't.

Ah Gee Duck, Forgive me for not mentioning that the cabin stewards have an assistant on the cruise line I travel on. They get if I remember correctly $2.00 a day of the $11.50 that is added to my ship board account.

If a person removes the hotel service charge from their shipboard account any monies that a cabin or dining room steward or their "Assistants" have to turn any monies received to their supervisor to be pooled with others in their section. If they don't they could be fired or demoted. Otherwise they can keep anything given to them.

I treated the auto tip like resort fees - covers the basics. But like hotels, when the service was better then expected - or better then needed - we took note. The room steward was wonderful...managed to find an icepack for a migraine suffering friend, found extra pillows for my mom, helped my older mom with suitcase and laundry...offered suggestions, even took pics of us. He was so nice and professional he put us first timers at ease. So, like I would in a hotel, we tipped him a few dollars extra a day - it came to $50 for two of us for a 10 day cruise. Not outrageous but enough to let him know he was appreciated.
