Train from Rome to Monaco?

Recommended Posts

Well, I took a train from Italy to Nice, which is west of Monaco, and the underground station was by far the best on the whole line. You can certainly do it, you would have to get from FCO into Rome proper and may have to change in Florence or Pisa. Do a search for Trenitalia and it will tell you everything you need to know.

does anyone know if there are trains from fco that go anywhere near Monaco?

not sure where carnival docks , i'll have to check.

that'll be my backup plan in case there's a problem w/ the flights,, thanks for any advice.

There are noon time trains (ES trains or Intercity trains) from Rome to Monaco which require 1 change in either Milano or Genoa, where the connecting train is waiting usually directly on the opposite track, and one more in Ventimiglia at the border. Travel times are around 8 1/2 hours, ES and IC trains have dining cars and service on board. It is advisable to use 1st class tickets.

Seat reservations should be made in advance if possible (latest on the day before traveling), but you can board the train without a reservation, too.

The railway strikes as often or as less as the flights... if a strike is announced on either transportation, surely the alternative will be sold out fast.

Monaco's train station is underground and has several easy to navigate exits. On each exit there's a bus stop for the local bus lines connecting you with the hotels. Taxis can be called to meet you at the station, too (taxi phones at each exit).

Traveling by train gives you a good opportunity to meet local people as well as doing some sightseeing along the way. The trip along the Italian Riviera is most scenic, sometimes running directly along the shoreline. Beautiful.

Enjoy!
