I have never heard of this before until now. This is too funny.

Gosh I hope never to be the one running to the ship!

Anyhow..after reading this thread you have given me something to look forward to doing on my July cruise when the ship will be pulling out of Cozumel.

Too easy on them. If they are late and the ship waits for them, they should be made objects of shame for the rest of the cruise. They should have to wear special shame clothing and special shame body paint. They should also automatically be at the end of every line on the ship and anyone else on the ship should be allowed to cut in front of them or steal their poolside chairs.

No level of degradation is sufficient for these people.

wow, that's a wonderful attitude. it's really hard to know each person's situation and there could be many factors that are out of their control that would make them late. it could also just be human error and they misread the time they needed to be back. i sure hope you never make a mistake, whether in your control or not....because karma really is a mother.

I've only seen one woman left behind. She got caught on the wrong side of the pontoon bridge in Curacao. But I've seen a lot of people pushing it, running down the pier.

I think another group missed one of our ports on an Alaskan cruise. Their cabin was down the hall from ours. I noticed that the mail piled up in their mailbox. (This was a Princess cruise, where the cabin stewards deliver lots of fliers, such as spa announcements and specials in the gift stores, to a mailbox outside of your cabin.)

I am a pier runner and have been so a few times. Can I tell you that it is not MANDATORY to be on the ship 30 minutes to sailing time, so anything beyond 5 minutes until sailing time I am not running, I am strolling.

I do not do it intentionally, sometimes we just caught up in the moment and are having a good time and just lost track of the time. But guess what, I bring my passport and credit card off the ship with me and if I miss the ship I am well aware that it is my fault and I would deal with it...it wouldn't teach me a lesson, it would just give me the rest of the night and another day or so to have a good time at the island that we were on. Let me also note that I do not and would never expect the ship to wait for us. And I can tell you that they won't.

Closest call was ship was leaving at either midnight or 1:00 am, don't really remember actually, but got caught up in the moment at Senior Frogs in Nassau, of course, longest pier EVER...and asked hubby the time. He looked and me and said we have to go. We had 5 minutes to get from Senior Frogs to the ship...not far, you can see it, but still had to get down Bay street, go through security and all the way to the last dock...and hubby had to pee...actually stopped to go to the bathroom near the gate to get to the dock...I started walking ahead since he is a foot taller he can catch up pretty quickly...so we are half way down the pier and here comes a golf cart...people from the ship asked if it was us, we said yes and they gave us a ride to the ship, we got off and got on and they pulled up the door behind us and off we went. We had 45 seconds to spare.

The next day we had a voicemail on the cabin phone that that they advise us for future cruises that we try to be on the ship atleast 5 minutes prior to sail away next time as we cut it a bit close by less than 1 minute.

Oh well, added a bit of excitement to the end, and if we had missed the ship we would have spent a few days at the Atlantis and flew back to NY to meet the ship and get our stuff...

In Ocho Rios, these guys were late:

They had the best run I've seen yet! In addition to looking anxious about missing the ship, they looked triumphant as if they were winners crossing the finish line! Everyone cheered--it was fun!

We have seen people left behind twice. The first time was in Nassau, the guy was running full out waving his arms while his wife came strolling along with her shopping bags. Unfortunately the ship was already away from the dock and it did not go back. They were put in a taxi and taken back into town.

The second time we were parked next to the Oasis in St Martin. We were just getting back to our ship (in plenty of time), but the Oasis had been gone about 20 min. This young couple came up who was supposed to have been on the Oasis. When they realized they had been left behind the girl fainted. It was sad. I think they had used their cell phone as a clock and because the ship's time was different from local time they weren't back when they should have been.

Remember all your "newbies".......some islands are on different time zones or in the case with St Martin they do not recognize Daylight Savings time so ship's time will be different. Do """"NOT"""" use your cellphone as a watch or you may find yourself watching from the dock as your ship sails away!!!

it would teach them a lesson to watch the time and to not take anything for granted!

The sad thing, Susan, is that it usually has nothing to do with watching the time. It has everything to do with their not caring about the ship's rules and requirements. It is all about THEM.

I'm talking, of course, about the ones who stroll back to the ship.

I'm usually one of the people yelling from our balcony for those people to hurry up and get on the ship so that we can leave. For once I would LOVE to see the ship pull away with all of those people on the dock - it would teach them a lesson to watch the time and to not take anything for granted!

Man you guys have a poor attitude. I have taken alot of cruises and never wished that on anyone.

I don't see a point in yelling out at them. The officials can do that. I don't yell out to passengers when it's time to board my flight at the airport gate. :)

Just wondering.....what does the cruise line do when parent don't make it back to the ship in time and their kids are in day care (camp carnival etc).

I wouldn't leave my kids on the boat w/o me on the ship, but I can't think of a worse nightmare.

Yes, but the officials don't! Someone has to embarass them! Sorry, but if everyone else can make it back on time, why should they think it's all "about them"!!!:p

This came up on another thread and the answer was if the missed the boat because of an accident or legal problem the children would be taken off of the ship and brought to them, if they missed it and the ship had not heard from them, they would send staff to their room to watch the kids until they arrived home or the next port if the parents could get there and they would be charged for the babysitting fees. And maybe something about not being able to cruise again....

On our cruise last month on the Conquest. We had already lifted the anchor in Gand Cayman when the called 6 names over the PA of course we were on the Lido deck just watching when we see this tender boat headed our way. We could count 6 people on it had to be the 6 they had just called out. When they got to the ship we were over a 1/2 mile from the pier. In Cozumel we didn't get to see any runners but did see a highly intoxicated lady throw a beer bottle in the water needless to say she throwed it in right in front of Carnival security. So she got escorted right onto the ship.

The best excursion in Cozumel is standing on the Lido or relaxing on the balcony watching the drunks run down that long pier. ::eek::D

I agree and the best part all of this entertainment is free. In fact I would love to see a cruise director actually add it to the fun times. Can you picture this:

3:00 Everyone on Board

3:25 Watch the Pier Runners

3:30 Sail Away from Cozumel

3:30 Wave to the drunks at Fat Tuesday who missed the ship

P.S. Keep in mind that the butt of my jokes are those irresponsible passengers who don't care about anyone else. If someone had a legitimate problem (accident / vehicle breakdown etc.) I would hope the ship would make an accommodation . In this case a call to the port agent would make sure that they were taken care of , however according to several cruise directors I have spoken too about this subject only small percentage (<2%) have a legitimate reason.

In Cozumel we saw 2 passengers mix-up their times and missed b/c there were 2 Carnival ships next to each other. They thought the horns were for the other ship.

They'd been drinking of course. The lady was just in a bikini and flip flops. The man in a t-shirt and swim trunks with a little bag that had towels. We were in line to get on our ship when they came up stumbling with a pier guard in tow. They kept asking where their ship was. The Carnival people just pointed out to sea where the ship was sailing off.

We heard later that they were allowed on our boat. Not sure what they did once back home to get from New Orleans port to Miami where they were docked.
