You can purchase bottles of liquor and wine before you board and have them waiting in your cabin to mix your drinks there. There are overpriced, but still cheaper than buying cocktails.

As others have said, he can bring an empty flask on board, but have him put it in his carry-on so he can prove it's empty. Besides being handy onboard, it would be a good way to carry any leftover BV liquor home on the plane. Pack it in your checked luggage though.
