How accomadating are the ships for obese people?

My hubby and I are obese I will just admit it! Despite this, we are madly in love with each other and are taking a cruise for our Anniversary. We are of course trying to lose before the trip. However, what the the chairs, tables, and stuff like? Will an obese person be completely uncomfortable? The staterooms I know are small, I am asking about things like seating in the main dining areas an such.

Just ask for chairs without arms on them and you will be okay. My hubby is about 375 lbs and he is 6'4" and he has no problems. Go and enjoy yourselves. I say if you are comfortable with who you are you are ahead of the game.

That's one thing about cruising that shocked me. When I went on my first cruise, I was expecting a bunch of skinny women to be flouncing around in their bikini's by the pool. Boy was I shocked to see so how many, as my husband puts it, "healthy" men and women were out there. And I mean "healthy" if you know what I mean. I'm not putting them down, just the opposite, I was in awe of those people's confidence. If I were that "healthy" I don't think I would have the courage to put on a bathing suit and be seen in public. It was obvious that these men and women were very relaxed and confident in themselves. They didn't care what people thought of them. I wish I could be so nonchalant about my figure.:cool:

These "healthy" men and women were everywhere all over the ship. I felt very relaxed on our cruise. And after a number of cruises I can confidently say that all cruises are like this. The cruise ships are not full of Bay Watch beauties, but are instead full of normal people just like you and me. Oh, and to answer your question, the chairs and tables in the dining area are very accomodating for "healthy" people. :)

What ship are you sailing on? I'm sure each cruise line and ship will have it's own little plusses & minuses.

I've sailed Carnival 2x, and I was about 200lbs at 5'2" each time. My sisters sailed with us last time (shared a cabin with each other), & both are heavier than me (over 250lbs?). At dinner, they made sure they had chairs with no arms. In the main theatre where they had the shows, they tried to get the seating that was "bench seating", rather than with arms. The couple of lounges we were in had plenty of bench/couch seating. There are elevators everywhere, but I recommend the stairs whenever you feel up to it - great exercise!

The beds on Carnival are King. I found the bathrooms AND showers roomy (I have a VERY teensy bath & shower at home). What's very helpful is the full vanity with mirror outside the bathroom, so you can do your hair/makeup while someone else is in the bathroom showering or shaving.

Of course if you need any extra help, your room steward and/or pursers office can help. Like a plastic seat for the shower, or you prefer the beds as twins instead of pushed together, or anything else. I don't recommend asking for a handicapped room (as I have seen others suggest in the past). The only plus about a handicapped room is a slightly larger bathroom/shower. The rest of the cabin is configured for someone who is wheelchair bound - lower counters, etc.

The only problem I had was in the Casino on the Glory (I don't remember having the problem on the Legend, so maybe the Legend had a better layout, or fewer machines) was that the seats in the casino curved outward (backward?), so it made for less room between chairs when you were trying walk between machines (as opposed to walking in the main aisle of the casino, which had pleny of room). Even skinny people were having a problem with this.

Generally, the larger/newer the ship, the roomier the cabins are, with Carnival still leading the pack for roomiest cabins.

Rikiw, thanks for starting a very interesting thread topic. I never really thought about this, but it is very important.

While I have a few pounds on hips and tummy that I don't need, my real problem has always been that I am vertically challenged at about 5 foot or 5 foot one. I have trouble reaching things on top shelves when shopping and I can never see anything at a parade. I look at the bright side, though, I always have extra room in an airplane.

Anyway, I also noticed that in cruise brochures and commercials, everyone is in great shape. Once you get onboard, it is easy to see that it is full of human beings. Even the supermodels admit to having themselves airbrushed!

So, I hope you find some comfortable chairs to sit in. Maybe you'll see me one day, I'll be the one with my feet dangling because they are too short to reach the floor! :p
