I'm hoping to go on a cruise which will offer me the chance of whale watching. Can anyone recommend the best areas to cruise in and the best time of the year to go? Are you able to whale watch whilst cruising in Europe? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Alaska in the summertime look for ships that go to Icy straight point. That I know of Celebrity inside passage ships go there. Millennium and Infinity for sure.
Southern Caribbean cruises headed to Dominica will get your whales also year round. Just remember it is Mother Nature so she may or may not cooperate.

Back in 2007, I was on an Alaska cruise and we stopped at Icy Strait Point (a.k.a. Hoonah). Went on a whale watch trip there and saw quite a few fin humps from humpbacks. Then while having dinner sitting by the window at one of the specialty restaurants, we saw humpbacks breaching all over the place right in the bay!

Also, Maine/Nova Scotia cruises may also have whale watching.

Just caught this thread now, so thought I would share my experiences.

Both cruises along the Pacific Coast to Puerto Vallarta were fantastic for seeing whales/dolphins along the way from December through to March (ish).

Hot spots are just prior to and around Cabo San Lucas (migrating greys and humpbacks) and also Banderas Bay (Puerto Vallarta) for Humpbacks.

If you have a sharp eye and a good pair of binoculars (and patience); you could have spectacular sightings (we did!).
