What is the best thing to do in Bonaire?

What is the best thing to do in Bonaire? Our cruise ship will be there on March 4, 2010. We have booked Klein Bonaire Beach Water Taxi--but need some help with the right choice?

I don't think so. Bonaire is not known for beaches. You will be better off doing a water activity - either snorkeling or diving depending on your experience.

I agree that Bonaire is not known for the beaches. It is known for scuba, salt flats and the National Park. We rented a Jeep and drove to the park. What an experience. We loved Bonaire.

We are taking a 1/2 day fishing excursion. Will let you know about after we have gone.

For alot of sand in Bonaire go to the island Klein Bonaire, lots of sand and good snorkeling, but no shade or services at all. The east side of Bonaire is more popular for cruisers, good beaches, shallow, shade, reasonable food and drink.

Moski, we are doing 1/2 day bonefishing trip with Capt Chris Morkos with Piscatur. Google Piscatur or Capt Chris Morkos. He also does deep sea fishing. He lists his prices on his website. Our trip is on foot on the flats and is $250.00 + tip. He has answered our emails promptly and will meet us at the pier. I will write from the ship and let you know about our trip.

He does not take an upfront deposit. He requests traveler checks or cash for payment. Hopefully we do not spook any bones, we want to try flyfishing if the wind isn't too wicked.

We were in Bonaire a few weeks ago and had a great time renting our own boat from Boatrental Bonaire.

They picked us up at the ship, and even drove us by a store to buy ice and beer on the short (1/4 mile) drive to their office. The whole day including gas was only $ 200.00 for the lot of us! A bargain.

We had a terrific day.

There are a few restriction, like you can snorkel but for some reason you can't tank dive.... and you can't tie up at another marina...

If the Boatrental Bonaire people monitor this site maybe they can explain the details on what you need to rent one of their boats and the limits...

Bonaire has a beautiful white sand beach with the most amazing color aqua water at Lac Bay. If you are an experienced snorkler you can kayak out to the reef/breakwater. The bay itself is very large and created by the spill over the reef, and it is warm and shallow, to the waist, quite far out. This beach is also known for great windsurfing. There are chair rentals, restaurant/bar, shade and facilities on the beach.

Your Pixs make it look unbelievable!! How far is it from the cruise ship pier and what would a taxi cost???

We did laundry in Bonaire...it was an 8 to 12 minute walk from the ship to Madero self-service laudry (Next to the commercial Carribean Laundry at Kaya Gilberto F. Croes 5-A, Kralendijk ). $9 for a Large Washing machine; $5 Small Washer; $7.25 Large Dryer; $5 Small dryer. It took 30 minutes to wash and 45 minutes to dry. For $1.80 they would move the wash to the dryer and start it for you, which would give you almost an hour and a half to wander around town!

Snorkeling or Diving are the big attractions in Bonaire!

Our last time there, we went to Spice Beach Club and had a wonderful day! :)

Diving is why virtually all go to Bonaire for a week long vacation along with some windsurfers and bird watchers. If you ever thought you might like to try scuba diving--do it on Bonaire! It's a wonderful dive location and one can dive almost anywhere on the west side from shore which is very unusual on the planet......The water is almost always calm and clear. You can stand in the water getting acclimated, adjusting equipment, etc. in many locations on the western shore of Bonaire. I've been about 20 times and will return--already bought airfare for next summer!!

If you are already going to Klein Bonaire. Bring your own or rent snorkel gear and drift snorkel. Walk towards the left as far as you want (facing shore). Walk in somewhere that's not too rocky and let the current bring you back to where the boat dropped you off. If you walk about 30-40 mins. You will notice the excursion boats snorkeling in an area. You may get lucky and see a sea turtle. The fish are abundant and the colors amazing. Keep in mind there are no facilities or shade. So if you are there for the beach you will be baking in the sun. Bring plenty of water. There are no lifeguards. So I would not recommend this if you are not a confident swimmer. The drop in to the abyss can be intimidating off shore. But the coral and fish are only a few feet from the shoreline at many spots.

4 years ago we had a large group cruise with one stop being Bonaire. Ages were 11-66. We all still say there is no where else like Bonaire. We rented vans and drove through the park and snorkeled. Another great place to snorkel is on the right hand side of where the ships dock.
