The_Canadian Posted September 24, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 24, 2013 Evening Mr Payne, The RMS Queen Mary 2 is my favorite modern day ship. She has grace and style that few modern ships have. My question is: How did your design team work out the necessary size for QM2? What were the economic consideration that drove you to make her the size she is? Stephen M. Payne Posted September 25, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2013 Dear Canadian, It was economics that determined what the size of the ship had to be. With the liner attributes adding some 40% more to the price of the ship, I had to take full advantage of "the economies of scale" which basically says the larger you make the ship the lower the price each berth becomes. I knew that the ship would have to be significantly bigger than Queen Elizabeth 2 and it took a few iterations before the design emerged with 1,310 passenger cabins and 150,000 gross tonnes. This is when the figures began to look more promising and Carnival ultimately decided to proceed with the project. Thank you for your question.
