Copenhagen: Top Six Must-Sees There??!!

From the Toronto Star late last month, they have this headline: "Europe Travel: Six things to do in colourful Copenhagen" with these highlights: "Copenhagen’s ties to the ocean are as strong today as they were in ancient times. Here are six reasons to enjoy this efficiently run, enchanted city of canals and cobblestone streets: from its streamlined public transit system and dedicated cyclists’ lanes to stunning architecture, splendid castles, museums and fairy-tale parks."

On Tivoli, this author provided a super great summary and many wise reasons to visit here: "Walt Disney was inspired in 1950 to construct Disneyland after visiting Tivoli Gardens in the heart of Copenhagen. Tivoli opened in 1843 and encompasses eight hectares with 1,000 trees and 400,000 summer flowers planted throughout the gardens. It boasts upwards of 40 restaurants, a Chinese-style pantomime theatre, open-air concert stage, amusement park and Denmark’s longest salt-water aquarium. Arrive in the evening when the gardens are lit up with jaw-dropping Chinese lanterns and multi-coloured lights, which truly make it a magical kingdom"

The other five must-see suggestions with good details are: Denmark’s beloved Little Mermaid; Amalienborg Slot with the four rococo-styled residences of Denmark’s royal family; the nearby Renaissance castle that inspired Shakespeare’s “Castle of Elsinore” in Hamlet; Copenhagen's massive green spaces including Italian-inspired Frederiksberg Slot and the unique Christiania area of the town. If you have an upcoming trip to Copenhagen planned, or want to relive old, great memories from being there, this might be worth reading and/or saving.

At Tivoli, their main gate is lighted in a spectacular and welcoming manner.:

A guard and statue in front of the current Royal Palace in Copenhagen. Amalienborg Slot includes four rococo-styled residences of Denmark’s royal family. This site includes a museum surrounding an octagonal cobblestone courtyard. Daily at noon you can witness the Royal guards walk from Amalienborg Palace to Rosenborg Castle for the Changing of the Guard. Adult fee for museum about $13. For more info, see: ses.dk/amalienborg.:

Copenhagen's famed and beloved Mermaid statue is fairly small (1.25 meters or 4.1 feet) but attracts large crowds. It is now back after spending the summer of 2010 in China. The heroine of Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale gazes out over Copenhagen’s harbor. The Carlsberg brewery owner commissioned this sculpture and it was unveiled in 1913. After years of the statue being vandalized, the Little Mermaid was moved to her present and safer perch.:

Bike riding in Copenhagen is super big and busy in the Danish Capital. You need to keep an eye out, especially during the early morning later afternoon “rush hours”. Folks are on the way to work with an “intensity”.

This is the Gefion Springvandet fountain we walked past on our afternoon stroll back to our docked ship. This is Copenhagen’s largest monument and was built in 1908. It is based on a Scandinavian mythical tale of the goddess Gefion who plowed the island of Zealand out of Sweden. It was donated by the Carlsberg Foundation on the occasion of the brewery’s 50-year anniversary. Legend has it that the Swedish King promised the goddess Gefion as much land as she could plow overnight. She turned her four sons into oxen and set about accomplishing this herculean task. By the time dawn broke, she had ploughed a sizeable chunk, which she then tossed into the sea. From it sprung the island of Zealand, where Denmark’s capital now sits.:

Excellent choices for seeing the best of Copenhagen.

But they did lave out I would think, one of the cities main attractions and sections, Nyhavn. This is just an amazing section of quaint shops and restaurants overlooking the canal where many, many sailors have come to Copenhagen. from here you can also do the Canal Boat Tour which is an automatic must see/do when visiting this city.

Even just walking around, exploring this marvelous city turns up many, many wonderful sites that you will remember for a lifetime.

Here are a few more pixs of some of the main attractions of this wonderful city

The colorful Nyhavn section where you can stroll around and catch the Canal Boat tour

Seeing Copenhagen from a different view is great when on the Canal Boat tour

Across the street from Tivoli is the main square in Copenhagen, where their City Hall is. You can go in and tour this building also

While in the square so not forget to ahve a seaton the Statue of Copenhagens most favorite son, Hans Christian Anderson

Another thing, not to be missed while in Copenhagen is the Rosenborg Castle where you can tour the wonderful rose gardens and then go in the Castle and see the Crown Jewels

As I said, some of Copenhagens best things are not found in books, just to be discovered on your own, like this Church sitting by itslef by a small lake

Just a marvelous city, so colorful and rich in history

Cheers
