Legend, August 2010.
Embarkation.
We enter our suite, where it is evident the previous occupant(s) had been heavy smokers (possibly cigars).
An unpleasant fug.

My wife reaches in her handbag for her bottle of Samsara eau de parfum and liberally sprays the room with her scent. "That should freshen things up a bit" she remarks.

Stewardess looks embarrassed.

I am a trifle aghast as the stuff is not cheap, but my wife is fond of extravagent gestures and used my (even more expensive) Hermes scent as a bedroom air freshner at home.

However it seems to do the trick.

Following day the room is (almost) fresh as a daisy.

I don't know if they used air purifiers and changed the curtains while we were out, or if Samsara has miraculous properties, but the smoke fug was gone.

Yikes, I'm also quite fond of Hermes; the Hermessences. Maybe I should bring a gallon of Ambre Narguile to use as an air freshener

Default NoProblem

We were on Spirit for a 10-day Adriatic cruise in August. (a good cruise) I have a sensitive nose and was concerned about smoke. A few days into the cruise, I realized I had experienced no problems with smoke. And we never did. The cabin was fine. Still, smoking needs to be sharply restricted to just one or two locations on the ship, and banned from all cabins and eating places. This will come, it's just a question of how soon. I hope Seabourn management gets moving. LittleRedJohn

So what is the Seabourn smoking policy?

I went on my first ever cruise with Regent back in April and had a really good time however I had almost decided for my second cruise to go to the Carribean with Seabourn. The reason for not going with Regent to the Carribean is that I really liked the observation lounge on Mariner but Navigator, which does the Carribean cruises doesn't have one.

The Seabourn product looks really good but a "deal breaker" for me would be having a cabin where the previous occupants had been smokers or having to share a restaurant or bar with smokers or to be more specific their smoke.

Do Seabourn have no smoking cabins? Is smoking allowed in the restaurants and bars? If the answer to the former is "no" and the latter "yes" I 'll have a look at what Silversea have to offer and if they don't have a suitable no smoking policy it looks like I won't be cruising in the Carribean!

Thanks

Swyre

Have you looked on the Seabourn website?
There is a wealth of info about the line that you might like to read at your leisure.

There is ofcourse no smoking in any dining venue on any ship.
I am a non smoker and have never had a problem with smoke on a Seabourn ship.

At present (we all hope for a future change of policy) smoking is allowed in suites - we have never personally been in a suite on Seabourn which smelt at all of smoke, and have done some 150 days on board. Smoking is definitely not allowed in any venue where food is served. It is allowed on one side of the top observation lounge in all the ships, but not at all in the club bar, which is equally pleasant for predinner drinks etc. It is also allowed at the Sky Bar on the starboard side of all ships, and in one outside area at the back of Seabourn Square on the new ships, but not at all on the main pool deck.

IMO the smoking policy on Silversea is more lenient, with a more 'Italian' attitude to smoking. There are usually very few smokers as a proportion of the passenger list on Seabourn, but a few more when there are many from continental Europe on board. Hope this might help.

There are no no smoking suites on SB. On our last cruise we were near smokers and had to get an air purifier that took 2 days to get the air breathable. I suspect our cabin had been previously occupied by smokers. The Observation Lounge on some evenings was also so smoky most of the non smokers left. When I brought this up with a number of the officers it was obvious they had heard the complaint often but it was "company polIcy" that they acknowledged created ill will.
See my earlier post on this thread to try to have this addressed prior to sailing.

Swyre - the above two or three responses on this theme will tell you all - we all tell the truth, and it entirely depends on how many smokers are on board, and also how considerate they are of others. Sadly there is no way of knowing when you book how it will turn out.

The latest comments on the wines also say a lot - you have to have some trade-offs in choosing your cruise line, all have advantages and disadvantages. I don't think there is as yet a completely no smoking luxury line? If someone knows different, it would be good to hear.

I've only ever been on one cruise but on Regent Mariner I'm pretty sure smoking was only allowed in one small lounge and on one balcony at the back of the boat. T went to neither place but to the best of my memory I didn't come aross smoklng anywhere else on the boat.

Now camping is my first choice of holiday so if I'm going to spend what is in comparison (or indeed in absolute terms) a lot of money (for me at least) on a cruise it's got to be "spot on" so I'll be sticking to Regent which so far looks like the only cruise company which is right for me which is a bit of a shame because apart from the smoking, I think I'd really enjoy cruising with Seabourn and they could even have a slight edge on Regent.

Thanks

We are former Regent cruisers. The only real negative on SB is the smoking policy which is a big problem and we may switch back to Regent or try another luxury line if we have a problem w/ the smoking on our cuise commencing this Sat on the Odyssey. The wine issue is easily overcome as noted on other threads. I'll post from or after our cruise on the smoking question

I bet when Meadows or the other SB/CCL execs are on board they're not next to smokers on both sides---or maybe they should be and that will end smoking in the suites!
Or maybe they smoke too!
