Santo Domingo from La Romana

We are docking in La Romana and would like to go to Santo Domingo. What is the best way to do this. Ship tour, rental car, or private tour?

I do not know the answer directly so can only explain my line of thinking. Note that it is an 80 mile drive from La Romana to Santo Domingo. If you only have 8 hours in port, at least 2.5 hours of it will be spent driving, and figure at least another hour getting to the rental car, returning it, etc. Not much time would be spent actually in Santo Domingo. It all sounds too stressful to me. I would lean on doing a tour of some sort where you do not have to worry about all these details.

A rental car does not seem like the best idea. We will probably settle for the ship excursion if we can't find an alternative. Just want to visit the oldest city in America while we are there.

We did an excursion to Santo Domingo a couple years ago through Carnival. My hubby loves history, studied in in college, and we figured we'd have three other ports to lay on the beach.

It is a long ride, but there is lots to see. The coastline is beautiful and makes me excited to return. Santo Domingo is really a beautiful city. Even I enjoyed it, and I have absolutely no interest in history!

I am glad we did a ship excursion because we got back at 5:00 on the dot, the same time that the ship was scheduled to leave.

The bus that we traveled on was a Greyhound-type bus, nice and cold, and the tour guide was informative and friendly. We had him take our picture several times! We had lunch included, and it was excellent!
