What do men wear on feet?

I'm going on my first cruise and I have to admit, i DESPISE sandals. It doesn't matter how hot the day is, you will never catch me in sandals or anything like that. It's not like I think they look ugly on other people, I just can't stand them on my feet.

I am the guy that brings his nice pair of Nikes or another nice pair of shoe to the beach/pool and after arriving then I take them off and enjoy the sand/swimming.

I know this must sound weird but I just cant do sandals, at all. On a scale from 1 through 10, how goofy will I look? I actually thought about buying Aqua Socks but I think that would even be worse. So, I guess my question is to the more experienced cruised then I, what do you see males wearing while on the ship or port or islands?

I also never wear sandals on the ship. I put on my sneakers even to just go from my cabin to the pool or thermal suite. Never received a single comment from either crew member or fellow passenger that I am in breach of any unwritten rules against closed-toed footwear.

Living in a hot climate my friends (mostly the female ones) regularly ask me why I do not wear sandals during the summer. I guess it is kinda disturbing that they do not realize how goofy it really would look for an almost-middle-aged guy with size 14 feet to wear open-toed shoes.

Bottom line is that if the sandals-loving crowd doesn't care how goofy they look wearing flip-flops to dinner in the main dining room, there is no reason to worry about anyone judging you for wearing sneakers at the pool or beach.

My husband will not wear sandals. He doesn't like the thong between his toes on flip-flops. My younger ds inherited his father's dislike of sandals.

Dh wears his Crocs around the ship when he's going to the pool otherwise he wears sneakers.

Ds wears sneakers/boarder shoes (or whatever their called) all around, to the beach & to the pool, everywhere, except dinner where he wears docksiders

Dh doesn't wear sandals either but we did buy some beach/water shoes he wore on our last trip. Ha he wore his sneakers to the beach then switched to his water shoes. I don't wear sandals usually either but I can stand a slide on for a quick trip to the pool or hot tub. I don't like anything between my toes either and I have foot probs so I need the support of a stable shoe.

My husband never wears sandals or flip flops. He wears tennis shoes during the day and never felt out of place, even at the pool.

He wears black leather shoes at dinner and after.

Don't sweat it. I rarely buy sandals either and when I do they are Birkenstock with leather uppers and NOTHING between my toes. Wear what you wish to the pool or beach and enjoy your trip. If you wish to talk to others at the pool, just look for all the other guys wearing full shoes.

What I have read on this board most people do not notice what others are wearing in the dining rooms because they are having such a good time. If no one notices you in the MDR then wear what whatever at the beach, Lido Deck, buffet, and the casino. Have fun.

I wear Birkenstock sandals every chance I get, for the last 30 years.

Sneakers are fine, but most will be in flip-flops at the beach or around the pool.

At the pool, the deck gets HOT...and I mean, scalding....flip-flops are much easier than sneakers to put on and off.

Get a cheap pair, and practice....I'm not a fan of "sandals" on men, but flip-flops around water are okey-doky!

Living here in South Florida, flip flops are a must. Many people who have moved down here, swearing to never wear them but most end up wearing them if they enjoy a pool or the ocean. The ease of wearing flip flops just can't be ignored. When I am on a cruise ship, I always have my flip flops on in the day, when I go on excursions I will usually wear sneakers or deck shoes. To each his own, just be comfortable and enjoy!

I wear sneakers most of the time, but boat shoes to the pool or the beach. As others have said, most people neither care nor notice. Unlike the so-called formal nights debate, the "fashion police" usually never weigh in on this one.;)

Wow, I guess I'm not the only one who hates flip-flops. I just can't stand the feeling of that rubber thing between my toes; it gives me the worst irritation. Just like the OP, I always hated the feel of flip-flops, although living in the Midwest made that quirk more socially acceptable than for someone in, say, Florida. But clearly, wearing sneakers to the pool or the beach looks odd, and wearing socks with open-toed shoes is out of the question. So I looked for alternatives ever since I was old enough to pick out my own clothes and shoes.

One thing I found working extremely well for me is rubber pool slippers, made by Speedo or an equivalent brand. They have a solid structure going across the top of your feet, not between your toes, and they still look like a less open version of flip-flops. They're also very comfortable, almost like leather house slippers. No one ever gave me strange looks for wearing those around the ship and on the beach in ports. They look as "normal" as the more commonly worn flip-flops, something like this. They come with smooth soles too, although this kind gives you better traction while walking.

I gave flip-flops many second chances and still disliked them as much as the first time. I just can't get past the irritating feel of that thing going between the toes. That, and they keep falling off my feet; it's almost like I gotta use my toe muscles to get them to stay on. So it's the pool slippers for me. Perhaps you'll be comfortable with them too. They run for $20 at Walmart for a basic pair, or higher if you want a quality brand name.

For the most part, I don't think anyone will pay much attention or care about your choice of foot gear. On the other hand, if you really want to draw attention to yourself (and your feet), you could wear some bright neon-colored sneakers (green?) with a tux on formal night. Now that would get the tongues wagging!:D
