Port shutdown averted as dockworkers reach tentative agreement

"Dockworkers and their employers reached a tentative agreement on royalty payments, averting a strike that would have shut down eastern U.S. ports for the first time in 35 years.

The International Longshoremen’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance will continue negotiations for another 30 days, according to the Federal Conciliation and Mediation Service, which was working with the two groups. A strike would have closed ports from Maine to Texas that handle 45 percent of commerce."

You guys do realize that that work stoppage has little to zero effect on the cruise lines right ? That's labor action that affects containers.

Also it was only a 30 day postponement.

Actually, management was threatening a lockout if the union struck, and that would have affected all ships, including cruise ships.

Also this is more than a 30 day postponement. The union and management have now agreed in principle on the main issue being negotiated, the container royalty payments to longshoremen. The 30 days allows both sides to dot the i's and cross the t's on that agreement and hopefully come to an agreement on the remaining issues.

Those workers make over $120,000 per year. Their needs are not a problem. Unfortunately, less than 15000 longshoremen seem to have tremendous power over our economy.
