Wood items as well. You may not know what's hiding inside and you probably don't want to know.

I believe the pre-packaged cereal boxes are acceptable in port. But it's wise to let them know what you have.

On our Hawaiian cruise last month, there wasn't a notice in the Patters, but there was definitely mention in the PA each port morning that food was not be taken off the ship.
We had factory-sealed energy bars with us on the day we had our all-day excursion, but didn't need it. And had a decent lunch as part of the tour (on one previous excursion the included lunch was food I couldn't eat, so I was definitely hungry until we got back to the ship). If we ever get to go on an Australian cruise (which is on our dream list), I'll know to wait til we find food in the port.

Fruit Loops for me! I agree they really come in handy on the bus ride back from a tour.

New Zealand ports had the cutest beagle sniffer dogs- and they were very good- in the morning- we had gone to a chocolate factory- came back- emptied my tote bag- we were going back ashore- and the little darling smelled the left over chocolate- came over- sat by my side- until the handler came over- and they took a really good look at all the items in my bag- they were very serious about it- and there had been announcements-
I would not carry any foods off the ship- not worth it- and those laws are there for a reason - rlblack |

Some countries take this VERY seriously and don't have a sense of humor when it comes to carrying foodstuff off the ship.

I have been in some ports where besides the authorities using dogs, they are carrying machine guns (not the dogs).

Yup. Big ass assault weapons held by grim-looking young men.

It usually is because they can source the ingredients and be reasonably sure no cross contamination has occurred on the ship. That said, if you take one with raisins or dried fruit you may find they don't allow it.

Interesting thoughts! Yes it is fun to find a local restaurant in port and sample the local food. We have never taken food off the ship.
