Why are Quantum and Ovation in Asia?

This is simply a curiousity of mine...

Does anyone know why Royal put Quantum and Ovation in Asia? It seems so weird that they marketed these ships so heavily, to only put one in North America. It so weird to me that they directed these towards the Asian market...I don't think I even heard anything at all about Ovation!

I know Asia is a growing market, but it is it really that in demand that Royal puts some of it's newest ships there with no exposure to the US market? Personally, I'd like one in FL to do Caribbean cruises. Anthem's basic Bahamas/Florida itineraries from NY seem boring.

Asia (especially China) is a very profitable market right now. I expect they would like even higher capacity ships there, and I would not be surprised to see Oasis class ships servicing the China market in the near future.

I dont understand why you feel new ships must have or should have exposure to the US markets first or at all.

I can only think Royal Like any large corporation has done some extensive market studies before deploying their ships.

The good thing with cruise ships is as markets change they can relocate very easy to changing demands.

Also, with regard specifically to Quantum class in China, I believe they change the Music Hall into some sort of gaming venue. So they have a very large capacity ship with more space for gaming.

No, I don't think that way. I just find it interesting that Royal heavily advertises the Quantum class and the activities that come with it, but there is only one ship in the US.

Personally, if I was a first time cruiser, I'd feel a little let down that the Ripcord and SeaPlex depicted in commercials are only on one ship accessible to me.

They converted the Diamond Lounge into a high rollers casino for the Asian market. I couldn't understand why they had at least 8 cctv cameras in there until I read it underwent conversion between Southampton and China.

Interesting! I know there's a huge demand for gaming in China...look at Macau!

people who sail the Caribbean want CHEAP cruise fares. these are brand spanky new ships that are charging a premium to cover the cost of getting them underway. right now, Asia WILL pay the higher prices without balking, whereas US cruisers are shying away and demanding discounts and upgrades and whatnot.

The deck plans for Ovation starting in December 2016 show this location to be either Diamond Lounge or high rollers depending on where the ship is.

Diamond Club / Golden Room (changing based on sailings)

Diamond Club (UK / Global Odyssey and Australia sailings)

Diamond, Diamond Plus, and Pinnacle Club Crown & Anchor® Society members enjoy access to this lounge, created to serve these loyal guests with concierge access, complimentary continental breakfast, and evening drinks.

Golden Room (Asia sailings)

An elite, invitation only lounge reserved for our VIP Casino Royale guests

We are going to be on Ovation for a transition cruise on April 2018. I wonder which way the lounge will be set for that cruise? I am hoping Diamond Lounge.

The demand in Macau is actually artificially depressed by the gov't right now via the visa limits/anti-corruption drive/smoking bans. Makes perfect sense to have two giant floating casinos over there to capture all of the gamblers that are fleeing Macau for other asian gambling destinations. the fact that withdrawals from the casino are mixed into other shipboard charges on credit card statements must also help, since gambling debt can't legally be collected in China.

Can't believe Harmony is sailing out of Florida...

To the Op - population of China is over 1.35 billion, population of US over 318 million. Whats the bigger market? Don't be surprised if the next Oasis class heads over there.

Maybe #5 but not number 4 according to this article. Article compliments of Lloyd.

I also wondered the same thing. Not for any other reason than why 2 Quantum class and not 1 Quantum class and maybe another class of ship.

Ovation is also doing South Pacific and New Zealand cruises from Sydney. We are sailing on January 28th, 2017. Things seem so topsy turvy with RCI at the moment, I have my fingers crossed that it will be ok.

Apparently, it is quite a change for Australia and New Zealand to have new cruise ships sailing here - we seem to end up with recycled ships from the Northern Hemisphere as our populations are so very small

Prices on Ovation are fairly expensive and I believe quite a few things on board are geared for the Chinese market.

Cruise ships follow the money. There is a huge boom between Australian and Asian cruisers at the moment. In Australia, Celebrity and Carnival have grown successful markets, and Royal has also been growing the market there for years. In Asia, the market is growing exponentially. Princess, NCL, Genting and Royal have all sent/are sending BRAND NEW ships to Asia. they wouldn't do it if they weren't confident in the business. There is money out there and Royal is trying to get it. And the best part is: They are getting it. The next Quantum class will most likely be US based (at least I speculate. I can see San Juan or Galveston, or maybe doing Navigator's split Miami/Europe itineraries), but Royal is at a time now that they have the attention of the global cruise market, and they're doing something about it. I applaud them, because when I want to cruise through Asia, I'll have a world-class ship to do it on. :)

Being based in Asia, I like it that there are more and more cruise ships plying the continent, especially the newer ones. It was not so long ago that all we had were NCL's (very much inferior) sister line Star Cruises and poor tired Legend of the Seas. What I would like to see from RCL is them extending the Suite Class offerings to these sailings or at the very least, make it extremely clear which regional sailings do have them and which do not - if you look at the (i) online brochure (Suite Class applies to all SG and SYD departures), (ii) website (Suite Class only for departures until 23 January 2017) and (iii) call centre (you probably get as many answers as many times you call), you will just get more and more confused.

Not all of us are high rollers and we do cruise for the product (given that we save on the airfare needed to get to ports in Europe and USA), not just the itinerary so this lack of clarity can be frustrating especially as the prices are not lower just because certain things are not included (on the contrary, cruises in Asia are often priced at a premium (IMO) and also excluded from many of the offers).

Because we love oasis class ship and not Quantum class?? To be honest I just focus on cruises that sail from FL since I live in that state but mos of the time I read something about the Quantum class ship are bad reviews. On the other hand oasis class ship are getting lots of positive reviews. I don't really have an answer but this is what I think.
