Pan Am Airlines

Recommended Posts

Has anyone flown this airline out of San Juan? Was wondering if they have less of a wait then Delta or am to expect a long wait to come home after my cruise. We have a 4:00 flight so I am not worried about not having enough time. Just wanted to know what everyone's experience has been with this airline. Thanks

DMorris, very good question. I was wondering the same. Last January, we flew with Transmeridian and it was awesome! Not one person in line. Our baggage was even way overweight and they said nothing. Now when it came to the security line, that's another story.
We will be using PanAm from San Juan to Sanford, Florida April 18th..April

premiumrican - Yes, Pam Am DID file bankruptcy in 1991 and in 1996.

They started up business again in 1998 and serve the East Coast and Puerto Rico. They still have the blue/white globe symbol as well.

Interesting, I didn't know they were flying again. I the past several years I've seen the reincarnation of Frontier Airlines and Ozark Arlines. I'm not sure if the new Ozark is still flying though. They were strictly small time regional and tried to use some small city like Springfield, MO as their base.

I wonder if Eastern, Braniff and the recently departed TWA will be reborn?

Didn't know they went bancrupt, thought the poster meant they were out of business. Sorry about that.

There are various websites devoted to the "real" Pan Am, the airline that led the world for much of its history from 1927 to 1991. http://www.panamair.org is one of them, with the history of the airline available on this page. That includes this about the end of the "real" Pan Am:-<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>The Fall of Pan Am

The Lockerbie crash hurt an airline already in trouble. Passengers were scarce, Pan Am was flying empty planes. Pan Am found itself unable to pay its employees. The only option was sell what it still had.

Pacific routes were sold to United Airlines, Atlantic routes were sold to Delta and American Airlines.

Finally the whole airline was sold to Delta. Pan Am's Worldport at JFK airport in New York was created into the Delta Flight Center after the sale of Pan American World Airways to Delta.

Pan Am created a plan for a "Restructered Pan Am" with routes in the Caribbean and South American but after funds were depleted the plan ceased.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>This is about the 1996 to 1998 period:-<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>The 2nd Pan Am

September 1996 two, an Airbus 300 named Clipper Fairwind reintroduced scheduled service from Miami to new York. Within the year Pan Am added Santo Domingo, San Juan and Chicago destinations using five jets.

Pan Am merged with Carnival Airlines which resulted in service and quality deterioration.

In 1998 the second Pan Am declared bankruptcy and the remains of Pan Am were sold to Guilford Transportation.

Marty Schugrue started as a pilot with Pan Am. When furloughed he joined the Pan Am management team. He struggled to keep Pan Am afloat as the Vice Chairman. After its fall Marty was a founder of the Second Pan Am. Marty died one year after the fall of the Second Pan Am.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>And this is the site of the current holder of the airline's name, the "new" Pan Am.

The new Pan-Am is based not too far from me at an old air force base in Portsmouth, NH. They fly primarily to smaller airports outside of metropolitan areas. In Florida for example they fly into Sanford instead of MCO, Portsmouth, NH instead of Boston Logan.

They are purchasing older 727's and are totally refitting them. They have taken out a lot of seats to increase legroom. Last year I drove past their corporate offices and hangars, and there were maybe a dozen 727's waiting to get repainted. It looked like they purchased them from United based on the colors that were on them.

I have not flown on them, but do know people who have and have heard good things about them. I believe their website is www.flypanam.com
