what do you normally do when its raining while the ship at sea?

I'm hopin to be pool with our son, Our first family cruise...but when its pouring what do you normally do or entertain your kids (in case he doesn't want to be in the kids club).

You can still use the pool while it is raining - unless of course you are afraid you might get wet. :rolleyes:

Your other activities depend on which ship you are on. Some ship have a movie theater. All the rooms have TVs that show movies. If you have not already done so, you can explore the ship. Normally the activity staff will put together some indoor activities. There might be a class offered that you like. You can always bring along a favorite game if you like - just in case. Most ships have a library and a game room where you can play cards. Some even have a second game room with board games.

Where are you going? In the Caribbean most rain storms are short lived.

There are usually activities planned throughout the day - especially on sea days. I have only cruised DCL thus far though I am sure most lines have similar programs. On Disney there were family games shows, karaoke, dance parties, movies and many other activities that I did not take part in because there was so much to do. What line / ship are you cruising ?

I've never been on a cruise where it lasted for more than an hour or two. We wait it out. Sit in a promenade area or anywhere that we can see the ocean and rain and enjoy it. We play cards. Do you have kids' card games you can take? How old are your kids? Where are you going?

Thanks everyone, We are leaving this Easter Sundary at The Jewel from NYC (I'm checking the weather and it looks like rain when we leave). I have no problem with him in the pool while raining but the weather has been so cold (around 40) and I have reading that on the way back (2 days out sea) has been rough sea and cool. I'm packing DS and movies.

i just move my book reading to an inside seat, preferably near a window. But have never had rain last more than a few minutes.

I like the kids card game idea too...we always bring a couple of travel size games for the plane/airports (and my youngest kid is 28!).

Now on one cruise we had rain in port as we were boarding and people (including us) stood on open balconies with umbrellas. In Alaska we had rain in Juneau and went on tours as scheduled and got very, very wet!

Let's hope for no rain!

It's usually an Adult only pool, but when weather is inclement, it switches. They also have a movie theater, more activities, and you can always go shopping, get an ice cream, etc. The only time ours got bored was during a really rough return from Hawaii to Ensenade in April one year. The seas were really rough, and it got cold. Luckily, ours had carried the DS and they just acted as if they were home, but in the cabin. They ordered cookies and pizza from room service and played games while we shopped and went to the casino on the "we're bored" day and came out of it just fine. Usually they will do everything possible to find a sunny spot to sail. We just had some unusually weird weather that year.

We have a 6 yr old, I'm bringing him books, coloring books, DVD and his DS (but the DS is really just in case). Our son doesn't really like card games.

I don't go on "hot" cruises, so I'm pretty used to the rain at sea, sometimes for days.

The childrens' clubs usually have a fantastic range of activities, which can occupy whole days at sea. There should be a series of lectures and films in the day time, along with dance classes, demonstrations etc. I never knowingly attend a "sell" lecture.

On our last cruise, the day time films were always family ones....the main swimming pool had a sliding roof, so swimming continued as usual, with the children joining in.

It will depend on your ship and line.

Personally, since most kids do too much DS and too many movies at home, I think cards, coloring books, games are much more fun on a family vacation. What's wrong with a good old fashioned game of hangman?

No gallows on board, you have to bring your own rope and finding volunteers to be hanged is difficult.

As the others have stated, depends on many factors such as which cruiseline, which ship, which itinerary.

I was on the Golden Princess last December and the cruise started off with a major rainstorm, that had been occurring for several days in Los Angeles. Aside from our time in Hawaii, the weather was iffy. But Princess always has plenty of activities on sea days, so many that it's often hard to decide from some at the same time. (the Golden's Hawaiian cruises are unique in that many of the activities are Hawaiian-oriented: lei making, uke classes, hula classes, seminars, movies set in the islands)

This ship, as does many other Princess ones, have one major pool that's located under a retractable roof. In fact, most of the ones that are on the Alaskan itineraries have this pool. So when it's rainy or cool, one can still go swimming.

And don't assume that your child won't be interested in the kids' program. My daughter just has experience with Carnival and Princess, which both have full programs when school is out. (that's another factor: if you go when most kids are in school, there'll be fewer kids on any line, and usually a smaller program)

Unless it's a HUGE rainstorm, the ship will usually change course a bit to get out of the rain shower! Once, we zig-zagged all over the place, avoiding "spring showers"! It was pretty interesting, seeing it raining only a short distance away, while we continued to sun!!!!

Wow, That's great. My son would love to see that from our balcony, But then I rather hope for good weather. I'm checking for Sunday and it has chance of rain when we leave. Then Tuesday in Fl its Isolated storms but I'm hoping going there and back we have little rain and crossing my fingers for calm sea water. I have been reading past 2 weeks (people from The Gem and The Jewel) has been returning with rough water and rain at GSC.

I haven't found where you said how old your DS is - and that will make a big difference. The Jewel has a movie theatre, rock climbing, mini golf, and a video arcade (bring money for quarters!) - and tons of ice cream to be eaten. There is a library but I couldn't find if there is a card room. If there's not a card room, many times you will find puzzles or board games in the library. Often times you can borrow games from the kids' program.

My DS is weeks away from turning 10 and we'll be on our 7th cruise in about a month. He's been cruising since he was 3.5, and has never been bored on a cruise ship! He's always loved the kids' programs on all the lines we've been on so far, and makes friends there.

have you tried old maid and go fish? We found a kid size UNO that works with colors instead of numbers. (we took those with us too)

Movies and games are available on board and like someone mentioned they add additional indoor activities like crafts for the kids. I like to get into the gym or spa if we're at sea....

We were in the Caribbean and still hung out in the pool. It was warm enough. As for not wanting to go to kids club, our 13yr old bucked at it the first time we dropped him off. After that we couldn't get him to come out.:) Have a great time.
