Default Norwegian Breakaway Event in Times Square

At our Cruise Critic office, we just received an email from Norwegian announcing an event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday (Jan. 28) in Times Square in NYC. It promises prizes, pictures, a chance to meet the celebrity partners who will be onboard Breakaway (including "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro, hull artist Peter Max and chef Geoffrey Zakarian) and free mini hot dogs from Sabrett.

With temperatures expected to warm to the high 30s Monday, we want to know: Are you going?

Sherry, I just saw your SpongeBob icon. He's supposed to be there, too!

Don't go just by the predicted high temperature in the mid 30's. The actual forecast is for a wintry mix of snow changing to freezing rain, sleet and eventually turning to rain. Not a good day to be outdoors.

"Wintry mix" sounds like it should be more pleasant than it actually is, doesn't it?

Yes, my first thought is always that a wintry mix is something sitting in a bowl you snack on at a party. Then I slap myself in the head and straighten my brain out.

It's a seven hour drive from our house, so I'll watch for the pictures on Facebook and twitter
If we lived in NYC, we would likely go and check it out!

Not worth burning a "day off" for those of us that still have a job.
And I could make it there in 45 minutes too

I plan on checking this out at lunch tomorrow. I work at 6th and 48th...a 10-minute walk, if that.

Rick.

I'd be willing to bet that the only reason "the cake boss" is going to be there is because he has a new shop opening up at the bus terminal on 8th ave.

They really should have planned this for a weekend and in better weather.

You would lose that bet.

He will have a bakery on board the Breakaway, and I can guarantee that part of his contract with NCL requires his appearance at promotional events.

How can you plan something to be held in better weather? Events such as this are planned months in advance. Do you know of a forecasting service than can predict a particular day's weather months ahead of time? Are you likely to get warmer weather by holding it later in the year...of course...but you can't guarantee better weather.

They probably are holding it on a weekday because the ship will be based in New York and will depend on residents of the New York area for a high percentage of its passenger base. By holding it on a weekday it will attract most locals, as opposed to mostly tourists if it was held on a weekend.

I wasn't aware that the cake boss will be baking on board the Breakaway. If the ship isn't sailing until May, they indeed could have had it in better weather by holding the ramp up in April or even the end of March.
