The hours for the lighthouse are 10 am to 4 pm. Can someone tell me if they close at 4, does that mean a gate goes across maybe a parking lot or does the parking lot stay open for people to come and take pictures after the lighthouse closes. Thank you so much.

It's closed on Mondays. We found out the hard way three weeks ago when we drove up there only to find the gates locked.

The Kilauea Lighthouse is part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Here's the link to the website with info on hours, directions, and parking. Entry is free with a NPS senior pass or annual pass. There's no food allowed outside your vehicle, so leave the snacks in the car. They are rather strict about this rule.

This is one of my favorite places on Kauai. You will see amazing seabirds soaring and nesting on the rocky cliffs. The Refuge is also home to the protected Hawaiian Nene. During the winter months, humpback whales are seen in the waters just off the lighthouse point. Walkways are paved. There are no real "trails" to speak of. Volunteers are on duty to answer questions and will lend you a pair of binoculars. There are also spotting scopes located at the viewpoints.

Parking can be challenging on cruise ship days. Be patient and wait for a spot if the lot is full. Kilauea Lighthouse is worth a bit of a wait.
