Hotel in Athens for a night pre-cruise?

Hi All,

DH and I arrive at around 7pm at Athens Airport the night before our cruise from the next day. I was looking for a hotel convenient to the airport or the port to try and avoid going into Athens itself. The Sofitel at the airport is full and the Holiday Inn at the airport does seem really expensive for a Holiday Inn. Suggestions greatly appreciated, thank you

You might consider heading straight for Piraeus. There is an express bus: http://www.oasa.gr/xmap.php?id=px96&lang=en Alternatively, you could take the metro but that involves a transfer. Taxis are expensive and Athens taxis are famous (rightfully so) for rip off scams. If you are not a fan of public transportation, I suggest per-arranging a private car and driver.

Hotels there are nothing fancy but there several choices which will be fine for overnight. The Theoxenia is the most upscale.

You could think about going into Athens overnight?

We stayed in two different hotels on the same street in the Plaka area. The great thing about these hotels was their proximity to the ancient sites and also to Monastiriki Metro station - from where it's a straight run in on the metro to Piraeus. They're also on the metro line from the airport - so there's no changing lines.

Both hotels are basic, but clean and safe. You can check the reviews on tripadvisor. Cecil Hotel - http://www.cecilhotel.gr and Attalos Hotel - http://www.attaloshotel.com . Of the two, the Cecil is a bit more charming with an old world atmosphere, but the Attalos has a wonderful rooftop bar with views of the Acropolis.
