we have been to mt etna, taormina, naples, all of the amalfi coast and told capri is too far to do in one day with ships time....

so someone suggested paestum...but we are really not into ruins...more into seeing how people live, eat, shop....

does anyone have another idea?

If you are not into ruins then do not waste your time going to Paestum. It is a pretty rural area with not much to offer other then the ruins. For eating, shopping and people watching you could save yourself some money and just walk around Salerno. One other suggestion, if you have not been there, is to go to Ravello. It is near Amalfi but for some reason is missed by many folks who like to think they have truly explored the Amalfi Coast.

yes we spent a whole day climbing mt etna and seeing the villages around...

have also been to taormina...

why the question?

Probably because Salerno and Naples are on the mainland of Italy but Etna and Taormina are on Sicily. Seems a bit odd to mention them as if you'd done them from the same location is all...

We agree with everything Euro Cruiser says (at least in this thread :)) Vieti Sul Mare is almost like a suburb of Salerno and you can probably get there using a local bus (we have not done this since we always had a car). If you were to simply spend your day in the area you would have time to enjoy both Vieti and Salerno. You might want to take a look on Tripadvisor for recommendations on both cities...as a starting point to your research. One thing to keep in mind that you are in Italy, where many shops close in the afternoon (often from about 1:00 to 4) so you should plan accordingly.
