Default Cruising Bahamas late August

Okay I am totally new to the cruising scene and I am an Aussie so totally new to the hurricane & tropical weather patterns of Florida & the Carribean. Is late August a silly time to come all that way for a Disney cruise when there is a chance that it may be cancelled?

Also even if there is no hurricane (which hopefully the chances are higher that there won't be) will the waters still be rougher than usual anyway....just by the time of year it is? I am a bit nervous about getting sea sick too so if the seas are rougher I am sure that would be worse yeah?

Sorry.....just completely green to all this cruising stuff :-)

I hope not, we are going in late August 2014! It is always a possibility especially as August can be pretty active for hurricanes, but what can you do.

The cruise lines will alter routes as needed. This past season a few cruises were extended a couple days when Sandy hit up in the Northeast. The following cruises were then shorted those days.

Best of luck.

So have you ever sailed in hurricane season before then? If so is the sea rougher even if there is no hurricane around?

The season is from June 1st to November 30th. Prime months are August and October but the seas can be as smooth as glass.

I'm not sure if you are booked yet or looked at the prices, but generally May will be cheaper than August.

Quite true. Our WBTA was Sep18-Oct3. We had perfectly calm, glorious seas the whole time.

Generally July and August the humidity is worse than the threat of hurricane. The wife is a school teacher so our cruises in the Caribbean are geneerayyl mid June through the end of August and of 9 caribbean cruises we have not be cancelled or delayed due to a hurricane. We have had one near by that the ship had sto sail around and that one night was pretty rough but the reat of the cruise was very calm.

We cruised the Dream the late part of August last year and the seas were extremely calm. But it was also extremely hot and humid

I've sailed the Bahamas/Caribbean three times during hurricane season. Two times the seas were smooth and the weather was beautiful. Once it was terrible with huge waves. There wasn't a hurricane, but you wouldn't have known it--it poured and we were dealing with 70 mph winds.

The likelihood of the cruise being cancelled is very slim, however you might miss a port or even cruise an entirely different itinerary. Lines have been known to send ships north along the Atlantic coast to stay out of the storm path.

Sooner is definitely better than later, but you likely would not have had a problem. The Caribbean is mostly pretty smooth, and when there are storms they just reroute the ships. Even the Florida ports are seldom closed for storms.

Do check the weather underground site for water temperatures. In May they will be cooler than August. Enjoy your trip!
