Cruise ship route in New Orleans?

Do the cruise ships wind their way down the Mississippi River? Or do they take a short cut through one of the canals? It must be quite an experience either way.

Down the Mississippi, about a 6 hour journey and yes it is an experience.

Regrettably in our case it was all in the dark, departed early Saturday evening in the dark and returned early the following Saturday morning, again in the dark.:(

Still an experience but could have been so much better.

Yes, down the twisty, curvy Mississippi !! We left out of New Orleans about 4:45 pm in mid-March last year and had about 2 to 2-1/2 hours daylight. It will depend on the time of year as to how long it will stay light and be able to see much of anything. Of course, on the way back up river it is usually around midnight entering the river - arriving at port around 6:00 a.m.
