San Juan and St Thomas / St john

I haven't been to San Juan in years, so will skip that. My recollection is that the hotel was right on the beach and while the hotel was lacking, the beach was good.

St. Thomas--Coki Beach is free, right next to Coral World (check their web site for more info). Family friendly, good snorkeling. Same for Sapphire beach except that it is not by Coral World. Magen's--overcrowded, fee to get onto beach. Has nothing that the others don't except that it was rated one of the world's top 10 beaches. That spoiled it because that's where all the crowds are now.

St. John has far better beaches than St Thomas. Look at going to any of the northern island beaches. Trunk, cinnamon, hawks nest are all easy taxi rides from Cruz bay. Getting to Cruz bay is a bit longer though. If you like to snorkel it's hard to beat St. John as well. Magen's bay is a bad snorkel beach. Coki is better but still doesn't touch St. John. Also secret harbour is nice and not known.

Trunk Bay is beautiful and worth the trip.

However, the ferry ride over from St. Thomas can be VERY choppy.

VERY.

We did the ship's excursion on Fantasy in April and had a really scary trip over to St. John. 45 minutes of rocking and rolling-everyone sitting outside on the main level of the ferry was completely soaked to the skin-we are not talking sea spray here-we are talking waves coming up over the bow.

Next time we will likely take a cab to Red Hook and ferry over ourselves-the cab ride is longer but the ferry ride is shorter and in calmer waters.
