Taking sandwiches or similar runs the risk of food - and therefore your health - seriously being compromised in any heat, plus many countries won't allow food to be brought ashore. Much better buy something ashore or wait until you return.

I agree. Each country has its own laws concerning what may and may not be brought ashore. Things that you might assume are legal could turn out not to be. It's easier to simply not carry anything ashore.

 

If you don't want to take the time for a full restaurant-style meal ashore, eat a hearty breakfast before setting out. Then you can skip lunch or stop for a coffee and a snack somewhere and be on your way again quickly. We often make our snack stop at a pub so we can try a local brew and have a chance to talk to local people instead of other tourists.

Yes, many countries don't allow food to be brought onshore. Some ports even have food sniffing dogs.

 

Just buy something in port. It's good to try different foods anyway.
