Casino Procedure Question

I'll be going on my first cruise soon (NCL) and read that the chips you buy are charged to your room card. That's very different from a casino on land when I bring only a certain amount of money to play with. What happens when you win, do you cash out your chips at a ship cashier in the casino, or do they credit your cruise account?

Also, how do the slots work--is that somehow charged to your room account or do you play with your own cash on hand?

Do casinos on all cruise lines follow the same procedure? Thanks!

Hello! Well my last trip was on Princess and and while playing craps and simply laid down a bunch of 100 dollar bills and they gave me chips. When I was done I went to the cage to exchange them for cash. I didn't play much slots but from what I remember you got ticket receipts which you would bring to the cage and they gave you cash. Nothing was put on a credit card cruise car. You simply put cash right into the slot machine and create a ticket and go from there.

The casino will accept cash or your card. Some people prefer to use cash because it is easier to set a limit. I prefer to put it on my cruise account. It helps me figure out exactly how much I have spent on the trip (and I get double points since it goes on my royal caribbean credit card). Either walk up to the table and drop down some cash or drop your card and tell the dealer how much you would like to have charged to your card and the pit boss will gladly handle it for you. You sign the slip just like you would for any other transaction onboard and then they hand you chips.

When you cash out they will pay you out in cash. If you would like to you can take the cash to the pursers desk/guest relations and ask them to put it towards your sail and sign account. Totally depends on your preferences.

Slots I know take cash, and I believe you can go to the cage and ask them to charge your account and then they will give you cash to use at the slots.

Have always used cash but have never sailed NCL. It is my understanding, at least on the ships I have sailed, that there is a 3% or so surcharge for putting it on your cruise card. The casino is tough enough without strating 3% in the hole.

Good luck whatever you use.

On CCL, you can use cash or your Sail & Sign card. We were even able to use the S&S Card to get chips for playing the tables. But it does take a few moments and a surcharge. Use your S&S card in the slots and the money is credited to a casino account that you can cash out at any time.

Any chips you win at the tables can be cashed out at the Cashier's window

I know you asked about a specific line. but this is how CCL did it on my last cruise

NCL will let you do it either way. If you want to charge it to your card go to the cage area and they will give you a slip to bring to a table, if you want to just use cash, just bring that to the table.

I can only tell you what they do on Princess and NCL. Both are the same now. If you have cash, you can use it in the slots or the tables. They will give you chips on the tables to play with and if you leave with chips you can simply cash them in at the cage.

For the slots you have actually have 3 choices:

1. Use your room key card and set up a 'pin' then put cash on your card that is charged to your onboard account. This is done without any additional percentage charge like they use to do. You can play the cash on your card on any machine and cash it out at any time or let it build over the cruise. Just don't forget to cash out before the last day.

2. You can still go to the cage and get a cash advance that is charged to your room but I'm not sure if this method might still charge a fee (between 1 and 3%).

3. Use your cash in the machine and when you cash out, it can either be added to your room card or some of the machines will still give you tokens but not too many do any more.

Hope this helps and good luck!

We've sailed NCL four times and were always able to go to the cage and request cash for play up to $1000 per person per day. There were no fees charged and it appeared on the cc as a purchase. Of course, the amount you are able to withdraw will depend on the amount of credit available on the credit card.

We haven't sailed NCL in about four years but have read on the boards that this is still the procedure to date.

It is our understanding that Harrahs is now over the NCL casinos and you can use your Harrahs card on the ships. We'll be sailing with them in September so will know for sure if things are still as they were.

Hope this helps.

If you know, when poker is played in a ship's casino, how is cash handled?

Thanks!

Our last cruise was on HAL. I told my DW they had a 3% charge on obtaining cash at the casino, so take your gambling money.

Final day; charges for losing money on final bill!:eek:

Would cruise again on a ship small enough not to have a casino.:cool:

Can each person set up a separate bank for the casino even though our ship account is the same? DH & I like the casino but each would like to manage our own "bank".

Your shipboard account would have to be together but I do not see why you could not get a separate account at the casino for yourself and let your husband lose his shirt alone. Haha good luck.

Hi

Your shipboard account does not have to be together. My husband and I each have our own credit/debit cards, and we always set up our shipboard accounts separately, each charged to our own credit card. No one has ever even raised it as an issue (thank goodness because he doesnt need to know how much I spend in the casino!).

I am first timer on Oceana and P&O say its a cash free ship so I didn't know whether that applied to the casino ?

hi bridmo,

we have just returned from a p and o cruise on ventura and the form in the casino is this:- the slot machines take £ notes in all denominations, they also take tokens which you can buy at the cash desk in the casino. they are sold in various forms of 10pence, 20 pence, and 50pence. the machines pay out in tokens up to £100, after that they hand pay with the casino staff. (hope you will see that one in action! lol )

the tables play also with cash sterling, you just lay your money down on the table and the croupier will change it for chips.

you can also charge your cruise card in exchange for chips or tokens, the cash desk can sort that for you, but beware the 3% charge. all done its usually better to use your own money, then you can keep good track of what you owe... enjoy your cruise.:)

Actually NCL was on cruise line that did not charge a service charge for using your S&S card. I took $0 and took out all my money from the casino for private shore excuesions, for tips, for souveniers and for the casino. That way I got points for everything I bought ont eh trip. No Service charge. This was March 08. I have heard most of the other lines do charge the 3% though!!

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Lisa&Neb: I was on an NCL cruise in 2003. Our first cruise not on Carnival. One of the worst cruises I was ever on. RCCL is just as bad if not worse. On both lines the food was bad and so was the service. You had to chase down people if you wanted anything.

Anyway, single odds at the craps table, they (NCL), had two craps tables in the casino, but, only used one regardless of how crowded it was they never opened a second table. If you do like to play craps, Carnival has double odds and Celebrity has 3-4-5X odds.
