Angry GTY assigned on Sun - Need help!!!

DH and I booked the April 10 sailing of the Sun and I just logged in and saw that our GTY cabin has been assigned. We booked a few weeks ago during a "free upgrade" period and with our free upgrade we took the 1B (or is it IB?) category which, according to the website AND the NCL agent we spoke with, is supposed to be an inside on deck 9 or 10.

Our assignment is 4218. How is deck 4 "as good as, or better than" deck 9 or 10??

Do we have any recourse here? What are the chances of getting moved if we call?

Default Well..

Probably because according to the deck plans 4218 is an OCEANVIEW cabin, not the inside cabin that you paid for. Even though it's only a porthole you are still able to view the ocean, port, etc. and tell whether it's day or night.

You originally booked an inside GTY. Your assigned stateroom is an oceanview (porthole) stateroom which is category OF, higher than an inside category.

Looks like 4218 is in a good location with nothing noisy above it. You'll have a small couch seating area and an ocean view.

You actually got a better upgrade, moving from an inside cabin to an oceanview. If you are disappointed, you can contact NCL or your TA and try to request a "downgrade".

A deck 4 ocean view is much better than a deck 9 interior, at least for an overwhelming majority of cruisers. As the last post suggested, you could call and ask to trade to a deck 9 interior.

I have seen many people who have thought if the category booked was on a certain deck, they would't be placed on a lower deck. That however is not the case.

So an oceanview on deck 4 is considered to be higher than an inside on deck 9, 10, 11, etc.

But at least now you know it is an oceanview, which with a porthole, I would think is still nicer than the inside. Personally which floor has never bothered me.

Glad you are now pleased...to further brighten your thoughts: the deck four cabins on the Sun have rather nice sized portholes. I did not measure ours, but I'd guess it was about 30 inches across. it let in plenty of light. deck four is fairly quiet. another guest on deck five said his cabin was loud as it was below the jogging track. I think you were very lucky. have a wonderful time.

We cruised 33 days on the Sun in a porthole cabin and loved every minute of it.
I think you'll really be pleased.

Don't forget sometimes you may be at dock level . Every one can see in.

No worries, you can just pull the curtains when you need privacy. and then you can open those curtains for light and view...much better than an inside in my book.

And you are apt to be above dock level...below you is another deck with small portholes (presumably staff cabins and crew common areas)...and those were visible in port. It would be an unusual dock for you to be at dock grade, so do not let anybody rain on your parade...you got a nice upgrade.

Look at it differently, it's easy to get off/back on the ship when it's docked at the ports, and also for tendering purposes - often done via deck 4 on most NCL ships.

If and when the ship run into rough seas and waves, you will be glad you are on the lower decks (you are almost mid-ship but somewhat forward) ... We rode one for 12 to 18 hours last November outrunning a Noreaster coming out of NY, it was "fun" watching wind driven swells with the sea raging in 20 to 30 foot waves from our porthole, almost like being in a submarine.

The only minor drawback might be that (for embarkation & debarkation days) that you are directly below the reception area & gangway entrance/hallway for the ship, you might hear heavy foot steps in the cabin and huge luggage carts being moved around in the hallways as they are loaded onboard & being taking off. Majority & the rest of the time, it's NOT a problem at all.

sometimes what appears to be not all that great turns out to be wonderful cabin. We had this happen once, but we have had some yuckies as well. The deck might be important but getting an outside cabin is as well.
