We just got off the Princess Emerald on June11th. My husband had a brand new Columbia shirt hanging in the closet. It disappeared along with a pair of his echo sandels. It happens. There is always a bad apple (in this case steward) on any ship. In this case we were in the lucky room. We thought our valuables were in the safe. I guess not. This was our 15th cruise using different cruise lines and he has never had that happen before. As I said it happens....we will still cruise

We've had a couple of little issues, our Xmas decorations were taken from the door and security followed the cameras and people and found they were taken in a drunken cabin raid on the deck and we're all stuffed by the people involved into the trash. We were offered them back but we're all broken and the answer was that they had 'dealt' with the people concerned but would not say

This is why I use my Kyss totebag on cruises. It can be easily locked to your chair and the lock keeps the zipper from being unzipped. Uses a 3 digit lock. The fabric is resistant to being cut also. I keep my kindle, ipad and phone in it. I have used it a lot in public places where I might have to leave my stuff to use the pool or beach.

A crossbody bag is the ONLY kind of bag I carry. It is peace of mind.

We were looking at getting one of those since we do a lot of beach vacations and are planning/booked multiple cruises. I guess that you like it? Any other information you would share?

To the poster who said "they can't take it if you are watching it" - I guess you've never been pick-pocketed. Actually, they CAN take it, even when it is zippered into your pocket.

Maybe it is folks who are disgusted of the chair hogs...........not saying that is your case and I have never experienced petty theft or lack of a lounger on a cruise but I pick my dates carefully..............

I have a close friend who is head of security in a large mall. Dozens of items go missing daily. Many are recovered because of security videos or honest folks turning them in. Some items are later discovered in the owners car or purse. One common thread is that nearly every lost item is reported as stolen.

I was on the Dawn the same time as original poster. Thankfully i didn't have the same experience nor did I hear if any thefts. We never brought anything of value to the pool or lounges. Hope this didn't ruin the cruise for them! We had an amazing time!

Leave the watches, jewelry, and such in the cabin. I've cruised at least 40 times and have never had anything stolen. I did lose my camera in the theater, went to the front desk, and sure enough- someone had turned it in.
I also left /lost my camera in a bag with something I had bought from the gift shop in the casino. I was devastated, my daughters went to the main desk and someone had turned it in. By the time I got back to the cabin, they had called to tell me that they had it. I have sailed on the Dawn 3 times and will be sailing again in less than 3 weeks, always wonderful!

People nearby just think that someone is vacating a lounger because they pick up everything there and quickly walk off. It seems like they go through the pockets and the inside of your shoes looking for your tipping cash or watches etc. the stolen clothes and shoes are never found or turned in so they are being thrown away someplace nearby. Also some purses were stolen and never found , mostly in the confusion when the shops were busy. NCL staff could care less and at customer service they wont even apologize or even offer to replace your pool towels-which are always taken as well. Have others noticed more of this on recent cruises ?
I find that NCL's customer service to be VERY subpar. Some of them have even insulted me, but that's a story for another day. You could try leaving your stuff in the room. But even then it's not 100% safe as stewards leave the door to your room open and walk off. Hence I always am very weary of bringing nice things, like louis vuitton luggage, and try to not bring luxury items when cruising.

I often have to bring my laptop, and it's a struggle where to hide it in my room as it won't fit in the safe.

2 places come to mind - put it inside your luggage and lock it then slide it under the bed or stand it up inside
a closet if your cabin has one. The other place is sandwich it between bath towels in the bathroom taking
care that it does not fall out and drop on the floor - is there storage space under the vanity sink ?

After thought buy one of those locking cable devices and lock it to or around something in the cabin better if
it has a motion sensitive alarm ! I would like to electrify my belongs but that may be illegal but very effective.

There are a host of other preventive measures - make sure the cabin door closes and latches shut - the
balcony sliding door latch it shut when you leave somewhere - don't leave things out in plain sight that can
be a case of grab and run - tip your cabin steward well and get his attention about security of your belongings.
As others have noted don't be taking the jewelry and gift store with you to the pool.

Every cruise- including the one I just got off of, has very naive people who think it's perfectly fine to just leave valuables- to hold their "space". I don't get it, would any of them leave the same property at a Mac Donalds table while they went up to order???? Clearly a very false sense of security, with also the very wrong assumptions on "looks".

This is an excellent reminder to wise up and get better habits- that will pay many times over in securing your possessions.

We were talking about things being taken from the lounger on the pool deck on a cruise ship, not sure how someone is going to pick-pocket a beach towel.

And, no I've never been pick pocketed and have traveled around the world, but I'm very careful with my belongings.

So sorry to hear this.

Last year on Oasis on boarding day I left my new iPad in a backpack on a chair in the buffet. Strolled down to the cabin to unpack and realised it wasn't there. We raced back to the buffet and managed to find the table, not expecting to find the iPad, but a wonderfully kind and honest American couple were sitting there guarding it - they said 'we were waiting for you to come back.' I could have hugged them!

So there ARE honest people on cruises too..... Also left my epipen in a small pouch in the buffet later on, and that was returned to the customer service desk by a member of staff.

Thanks for mentioning your tote. I tracked it down (I think the actual item name is Coolbag) and it looked good so we bought one to use on our cruise in a week (thank you Amazon Prime). In addition to the security features, it looks like it is a pretty roomy 'personal item' for taking on the plane. And it will probably be the only bag we walk onto the ship with, and let our regular luggage and airplane carry-ons be put on the ship by the porters.

We aren't big 'lay by the pool' folks, but for the few hours we do that it will be nice to be able to bring our kindle and tablets without having to worry about them. And we will probably use it instead of using the room safe.
