Sailing Under the Harbour Bridge, Sydney

Squeezing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge on a big ship is a memorable experience.

We'll be on the Celebrity Solstice in December departing Sydney. Does anyone know if we'll be sailing under the bridge...that would make for a memorable sailaway!!

Celebrity Solstice will be docking at the Overseas Passenger Terminal which means no sailing under the bridge. But it is an excellent location otherwise - right opposite the Opera House and with a view of all the activity around the harbour.

I have watched some of the bigger ships, like Celebrity Solstice, do a kind of three point turn out of the OPT wharf, with the aft close to the Harbour Bridge, then sail straight ahead past the Opera House. As this maneuver takes awhile, you will have more time to enjoy a memorable sailaway.

Whilst in port, you can enjoy a historic walk around the harbourfront, under the bridge, from the OPT, past the restored finger wharves. You will see where the ferries used to depart before the Harbour Bridge was built.

While it is exciting to sail under the Harbour Bridge, Sydney Harbour in general is really one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. We picked up our pilot about 4:30 AM, and my husband was already out of our cabin and up on a top deck. Even at 4:30 he wasn't the only one.
