Is tipping (gratuities) expected in Chile &/or Argentina for:

- Taxicabs drivers?

- Doorman/Bellmen at hotels?

- Waiters in restaurants?

- Private tour drivers?

Your advice is appreciated.

I don't know if tips were expected, but I gave the bellman $2 per bag at the hotel in Santiago. And I gave the tour guide $5 and the bus driver $2 for each tour that I was on in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Most of the time I gave the equivalent of the above amounts in local currency.

Dear Mike,

Just got back from Santiago,Puerto Varas, Bariloche and Buenos Aires. Cab drivers you round up to the next full peso. All others should be tipped 10 percent and up for waiters and waitresses.and a dollar or two for bags and bellman,of course your tourguide if she/he did a good job.

You may tip in local or American currency. These people work hard and deserve tips particularly in Argentina where the exchange rate is so low. Incidentally cabbing in both countries is a very inexpensive and good way to get around large cities .

In Santiago and Buenos Aires, is it safe to hail a cab on the street, or should we call a radio cab (from a hotel or restaurant)?

thanks.

A radio cab is the safer option but we had no problems hailing cabs in both BA and Santiago.

Marty:)
