You didn't specify your cruiseline - easiest way would be to check their website, they will have listings of complimentary vs. for-fee dining options. In the simplest terms, the main dining room and buffet will be free. Almost everything else is ship-specific.

Welcome to Cruise Critic! :)

You might enjoy going by the Specialty (extra cost) Restaurants and reading the menu posted outside. Normally, it will have the amount of the extra charge on it.

Have a WONDERFUL first cruise! :D

As someone suggested, you should go on the Royal Caribbean website and find the FAQ section. You should be able to find out sorts of info there, especially about your ship.

And one thing to know, if a crew member asks for your cabin card before getting a drink or taking advantage of any service, undoubtedly it's to swipe your card for your account folio. The exceptions would be if roll call is taken at your muster drill (Princess now does this to ensure all passengers are at the drill) and when you get on and off the ship in the ports to keep track of you.

Just got off Liberty of the Seas in June. It's a great ship and we never ate in any of the for-a-fee restaurants. There is the Main Dining Room (MDR). Once you get on-board check out the MDR to the location of your table. There is the Windjammer. This is where you will eat once you board. It's buffet style but there is a great variety of food, including Asian, the Grill with burgers and hot dogs, salad bar, carved meats, steamers with meats, vegetables and Jade's which has Asian selections. There are pasta dishes, fish, rice dishes with vegetables, fruit and a buffet with desserts. The Promenade Cafe serves deli sandwiches, cookies, pizza and desserts. All these are free. They will have a set-up where you can buy your soda card if you don't buy it on-line prior to the cruise. You'll get an insulated tumbler with your purchase. You can chose to use the use the tumbler or the sticker which they will put on your Seapass card. Beverages like coffee, lemonade and iced tea and milk are free if you choose not to buy the soda card. At breakfast, you can eat in the Main Dining Room (which now has a small buffet and also has table service with the waiters), the Promenade Cafe (which has pastries) or the Windjammer (more extensive breakfast buffet). At lunch, on Sea days, you can eat at in the Main Dining room, otherwise, you have the Windjammer and the Promenade Cafe. There is a buffet set up out by the pool deck on Sea Days that is also free. You'll find a book in your desk/dresser in your cabin. If you look through it, you'll find a list of the for-a-fee places on the ship. There is also an ice cream stand called Sprinkles on the pool deck. The ice cream is free. There is a Ben and Jerry's on the Promenade deck (in the mall) where you pay for the ice cream, along with a cupcake place where you also pay. Believe me, there are plenty of choices without using the for-a-fee Specialty restaurants. We've just never seen a need to use them because we've always been able to find something we liked in the MDR for dinner. In the book in your cabin, you'll also find a Room Service menu. Room service is free except between certain hours (something like 12:30 or 1 am until 5 am). We always keep an envelope in the desk with some small bills ($1's and $5) for a tip. If it's a small order we give them $2-3, if it's a full meal we would give them $5-6. You can carry two bottles of wine on board with you. It's nice to order the fruit and cheese from room service or the spinach dip (ask for two orders of the chips if you order the dip) to have with your wine. All of this is free (except for the tip for delivery to the cabin). If you carry wine, carry a cheap cork-screw with you. Go to any bar and ask for a couple of wine glasses to have in your cabin. If your wine needs to be cooled, there is a mini-fridge in the room for you to put the wine in, but it is really more like an insulated cooler. You can ask the cabin steward for ice and an ice bucket and put the wine in the ice bucket if you have a wine that needs to be chilled more. You can't carry liquor on board. It will get confiscated and held until the end of the cruise. A great way to wake up is to use the door hanger (which is in the cabin, located behind the door), and order coffee and juice. You can order more, but we order coffee and juice to have while we get ready. They call your room just before arriving which doubles as our wake up call. That's why it's convenient to have the envelope with the tip handy in the desk for the person delivering your coffee and juice. I've probably left out some of the food tips, but others will be able to add theirs. Enjoy your cruise.:D

thank you for your help

We were all first time cruisers when we started and we all had to ask various questions on the ship. No need to feel embarrassed.

My DH and I started cruising before we had Cruise Critic or internet forums so we really had lots to ask on our first several cruises after we had boarded. :)
